FOOD4FARMERS UPDATE:

Mercedes Gómez Sánchez is a primary school teacher and an associate in the Maya Ixil Cooperative since 2020. In 2023 the General Assembly elected her as secretary of the Oversight Committee. She currently works as a promoter of Food Security and Food Sovereignty, in addition to supporting the beekeeping sector.

She says that she decided to get involved in the promotion to acquire different knowledge about food sovereignty and agroecology. Even though she did not graduate from high school on agricultural aspects and it was not her field of work, she was motivated to teach the coffee growing families of Maya Ixil about permaculture and agroecology.

In addition to having received training on food sovereignty and agroecology she has acquired different skills during the course of her training, such as being able to farm and the different practices in beekeeping.

Believe it or not, coffee has come surprisingly close to being banned several times throughout history. From concerns about its effects to fears it encouraged too much conversation and independent thinking, this beloved brew has certainly had an eventful past.

It's safe to say we're glad it stood the test of time!!
