An Update from Next Door Coffee
Two months ago, we announced that we were closing our Canandaigua location and searching for a new home. Since December of 2023 we’ve searched high and low—from Geneva to Webster—hoping to find a space where we could thrive. But time and again, we ran into the same challenges: affordable spaces weren’t in great locations, and great locations came with rents that were far above our budget. So, we decided we needed a drive-through to compete with corporate convenience. When we announced in December of 2024 that our CDGA location was closing, we were planning on moving to Monroe County and opening a build-to-suit drive-through location. But once the shop was closed at 1880 Rochester Road, we finally had time to evaluate what we really wanted. While we want to have a custom space, built just for Next Door Coffee, we can’t fathom paying 100,000 a year in rent (8,000 per month) when our gross on a latte is $5.00. And $100,000 a year is what most developers want from us.
During the past two months, we’ve gained clarity. We’ve come to accept and understand what mentors have been trying to tell us for a while. These days, most coffee shops can’t survive on coffee alone—they need to serve food to increase their order totals and sustain their business. But for us, it was always about the COFFEE. That’s what we love, and while we are good cooks and great bakers, food isn’t our passion.
So, we have decided at this time that we will NOT be reopening Next Door Coffee.
While we don’t yet know where our love for coffee will take us next, we do know how grateful we are for all of you. Thank you for being part of this journey with us. 💛
