Open year-round.
5760 Steese Hwy. (907) 389-2164. Located 28 miles north of Fairbanks (other side of Cleary Summit), it once was a busy gold mining town and the center of one of the richest placer gold districts in Alaska. The area is also popular with local winter-sports enthusiasts, aurora watchers, and summer hikers. Over 70 million dollars in gold was taken out between 1926 and 1

957. Today Chatanika is a "gold camp resort" on the Steese Highway - a lodge with a gold dredge across the way. The gold camp, with a hotel and a restaurant, is the old Fairbanks Exploration Company site. In and around are Alaska memorabilia and mining artifacts. From the lodge comes the traditional "Chatanika Days Outhouse Race". Each March five-person teams race a one-mile course, with four pushing and one riding in the specially built "racing outhouses". The original bunkhouse and dining hall of the Fairbanks Exploration Company are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Chatanika Lodge has rooms for rent, a saloon, a package store and family-style dining. Dredge #3, owned by the Chatanika Dredge Company, is a rare and very large piece of antique industrial mechanical mining equipment. Since 1963 it has been in its own frozen pond, not far from the Chatanika Lodge. At one time, is worked the Cleary Creek and Chatanika River.

🚧 Tanana Road Condition Update 🚧

June 26:

Mother Nature kept us waiting this morning with rain and slick road conditions, delaying our start. While crews waited for things to dry out, we made good use of the time by stockpiling more borrow at the Tofty pit. As soon as conditions improved, our teams got to work repairing three soft spots between Mile 8–9 using geotextile fabric and borrow. We also cleared out ditches between Mile 9.5 and the Blowback Creek Bridge to help improve drainage.

🛠️ Progress might be weather-dependent, but we’re moving forward step by step - and keeping safety first.

We continue to make progress and will provide updates through 511.alaska.gov as conditions evolve.

We appreciate your patience, Tanana, as we work to improve your road!

Welcome to the Ronnie Franklin Memorial 15th Annual All Car & Bike Show! It’s hosted by the Northern Lights Antique Auto Club of Fairbanks (NLAAC). The NLAAC, Chatanika Lodge joined together and created this amazing event and wanted to show support for an organization in our community. The Fairbanks Community Food Bank was chosen and was much needed of support at the time. Then O’Reilly’s heard what we were doing, and they wanted to get involved in this event too. We have been supporting this much needed organization the Fairbanks Community Food Bank for the last 15 years. And then all the sponsors started to contribute to the car show with door prizes for the car show participants and even for the spectators that came to this event. We are so proud of our community coming together to show support.
We also recognized a birthday boy in the house, Gene Hansen. He turned 90 years old! We also want to pay tribute to our passed NLAAC members too, so we included a collection of pictures of them.
Thank you to everyone that helped us to make this event happen!
