Doing the rain dance and praying for rain this Friday! Put 1500 # of a 50/50 mix of DAP and Potash on our clover/alfalfa plots and dressed the new plot appropriately from the results of our soil test. Tomorrow night, forecast permitting, will be Urea for our fall plots!

Food Plot Feature

Purpose: New Plot
Job: Full Renovation
Size: 1/2 Acre
Seed Type: Winter/Fall Blend - 75% of Oats, Wheat, and Rye + 25% Brassicas
Planting: Due to the drought we are NOT going to be tilling this plot with the Firminator RT. Instead, we will be letting the grass/natives grow back 6-8" and then hit with a kill down of glyphosate. After that is done we will use ONLY the seeding and packing unit of the Firminator to roll in and pack the seed into the thatch. With timely rain, we are hoping this technique will preserve the soil moisture by acting as a natural mulch.

As many of the long-time land managers know... location, Location, LOCATION!!! By far the most important lesson to learn while chasing big whitetails or any game. Stand/blind locations, camera placements, mock scrapes, and yes.. FOOD PLOTS! Over the past 3 years, we hunted the very first food plot I ever created. It was in an easily accessible location for equipment, just the right size, and it attracted some deer. Nothing to complain about right? Wrong... Although we had plenty of encounters, we constantly noticed the mature bucks would hang back, hardly ever entering the plot. This was due to the location being too open and too far off their normal travel corridor. Simply put, they felt safer tucked into the tree line. Hence the birth of this NEW plot. With the help of the payloader and the JD 5065E, we cleared this plot of all the bromegrass and 50ish trees. Located between two major pieces of timber and in the heart of the farm. This will offer the deer security, food, and eventually water (pond coming soon). This will offer us as hunters amazing canopy cover being tucked into the pines, another tool in our arsenal as we only plan to hunt this went the conditions and timing are right, and after some work, a dynamite enter/exit strategy.

REMEMBER - Just because a food plot can be there, doesn't always mean it should be.

This food plot in Cherokee County is up on a ridge top surrounded by "big ag" and oaks. Like most properties in this county, fall/winter food is in short supply. The main objective for this property was to supply food, fast. After purchasing the farm in September, the landowner wasn't going to hunt this farm a whole lot due to prioritizing other bucks. His main goal was to take inventory to see how the deer reacted to the new food and map how they traveled throughout the farm. Due to the drought and late planting we wanted to plant the fastest growing and cold tolerant food. One unique aspect of this farm was the 8-row corn screen to the east. This will allow the landowner excellent enter and exit opportunities with most winds in his advantage.

This food plot in Cherokee County is up on a ridge top surrounded by "big ag" and oaks. After walking the property we concluded it was best to get food on the ground ASAP per his hunting goals and in a drought. The landowner wanted to see more deer and hunt the ridge top for cruising bucks during the rut. A mix of clover and alfalfa was used as the primary crop due to minimal maintenance and not having to replant annuals every fall. A fast-growing oat was used as a nurse crop to provide a faster-growing fall annual and help the perennial clover and alfalfa establish their roots and take less browse pressure. This spring we will see a lush blanket of greens just in time for some turkey action!
