You still had time to leave.
That's the part most people don't know. 🦨
A striped skunk almost never wants to spray.
That famous defense is expensive. Once a skunk empties her scent glands, she's left vulnerable until they refill.
So before she sprays, she usually tries something else.
👣 Foot stamping
⬆️ Tail raising
🦨 Turning sideways to appear larger
These aren't threats.
They're negotiations.
She's giving you a chance to back away before she uses the only defense she has.
🌿 If you see a nervous skunk:
• Stop walking
• Stay calm
• Give her an escape route
• Back away slowly
Most encounters end exactly the same way.
The tail goes down.
The skunk waddles away.
And both of you leave relieved.
The spray was never Plan A.
The warning was.
