MULKEYTOWN, ILLINOIS — THE SILKWOOD INN

Before highways connected Southern Illinois, travelers followed roads linking its river towns. Along the old Shawneetown–Kaskaskia–St. Louis trail, the Silkwood Inn offered a stopping place—and a family home.

Illinois’ tourism office dates the inn to 1827 and credits its construction to Brazilla Silkwood. The building preserves a connection to the years when journeys depended on horses, wagons, and places to rest along the road.

Its best-known story, however, centers on a woman named Priscilla.

According to local tradition, Silkwood first encountered Priscilla while she was enslaved in the South. Their paths crossed again near Jonesboro during the forced Cherokee removal of 1838, remembered as the Trail of Tears.

The account says Silkwood purchased her freedom and brought her into his household, where she remained until her death in 1892.

Hollyhocks became part of her remembrance. Tradition holds that Priscilla carried seeds with her and planted the flowers at her new home.

Enjoy Illinois describes this story as a blend of historical fact and local folklore. Its details should be understood within that tradition, rather than treated as fully documented eyewitness history.

Today, the preserved inn serves as a museum, bringing together the history of early travel, household life, and a story passed down through generations.

Have you visited the Silkwood Inn—or heard the story of Priscilla and her hollyhocks?
