**-KEHLSTEINHAUS UPDATE-**
Historic brass elevator survives!
On Thursday, October 29, the company responsible for maintaining the elevator conducted its first post-fire inspection.
Its findings:
- The historic elevator's interior is completely undamaged.
- The elevator could still be operated during testing.
- Inspectors identified only minor technical malfunctions.
- Those malfunctions are believed to be repairable.
- The 124-meter access tunnel also largely escaped damage.
This is especially encouraging because both the elevator and tunnel are important surviving features of the original building.
The inspection is preliminary, however. It does not mean the elevator has been certified safe for public operation.
The Italian marble fireplace also survived, but a condition report has not been issued.
Another significant development comes from Robert Seibold, project manager for transport at Zweckverband Bergerlebnis Berchtesgaden.
Speaking at a tourism industry gathering, Seibold said the organization hopes to install an emergency roof within approximately four weeks.
This is particularly important because winter weather has already arrived at the 1,834-meter-high site.
The immediate priorities are protecting the remaining structure from snow, rain and frost, rather than beginning full reconstruction.
