The barred knifejaw (Oplegnathus fasciatus) is a marine fish from the northwestern Pacific, known for its distinctive black vertical bars (fading with age) and beak-like fused teeth used to crush shellfish. Popular as a food and game fish in Japan, it inhabits rocky reefs and can grow up to 80 cm long, though it's rare in places like Hawaii where it's sometimes found in the cooler, northern atolls. It has also been found in the Eastern Pacific, likely transported by tsunami debris, but is not established there.
