Trick or Treat? 👻🍬

I hope you picked treat because we have a very special treat at Gottberg! Our new BARLEYWINE is the strongest and most complex beer Gottberg has ever brewed.

This beer has EXTRA everything! Coming in at 11%, this beer uses tons of malted barley for lots of sweet malty flavor. The extra ABV means extra fermentation flavor with fruity esters. While the extra malt sweetness needs to be balanced with extra hops, including a Nebraska grown variety with a candy like licorice note.
This potent brew has matured for many months to result in a smooth drinking experience that doesn’t taste like it’s 11%. All the flavors have combined to taste like caramel and fruity candy 🍭 (no candy was harmed in the making of this beer).

Celebrate Oktoberfest at Gottberg 🍻🥨

Our Märzen is a traditional Oktoberfest beer style from Germany. It is an amber colored lager with notes of toasted bread and a malty sweetness.

This type of lager is named after März, the German month of March, because it was brewed in the early spring while the weather was still cool. The beer was then kept in cool caves or cellars until late September when it was served at Oktoberfest.

Now with modern brewing technology, it is less important to brew this beer in the Spring and let it age for many months to get a quality Märzen. However, I was curious to see for myself how the aging affected the beer, so I brewed it early and have been monitoring the maturation process over the past few months. Early on the toasty character of the beer was more prevalent and over time the smooth malty sweetness has become the dominant flavor while the toasted notes have mellowed out and become the background complexity.

The unaged beer was still tasty but giving it the time to mature has made a particularly delicious beer for everyone to enjoy for Oktoberfest this year.

… 2nd place 🥈 at the Divots Big Chill Beer and Cheese Festival. Our new Columbus Confection IPA was a hit in the Blind IPA Challenge. This hazy and juicy NE style IPA is on tap NOW! If you missed out this weekend, come give it a try in the brew pub.

This weekend was a lot of fun! Big thanks to Divots Brewery for planning this great event and including us. Thank you to everyone who made it to the event to have some beer with us and thanks to all the amazing Nebraska craft breweries for bringing many delicious treats for us to try. Congratulations to Kros Strain Brewing Company for the first place win and the delicous beer. Next year we’re coming for the trophy 🏆

Return of the Dark Star 🌌

This classic beer is an old favorite of Gottberg fans! The black lager, also known as a schwarzbier, is back at Gottberg after a decade. It has a beautiful dark color and a smooth, easy-drinking palate balanced with sweet malt flavors and a hint of chocolate. Dark beer lovers will definitely enjoy this beer, while those who think they don’t like dark beers might be convinced by this lager with less of the roasted flavors that are often found in stouts or other dark beer styles.
