After nearly 60 years as a beloved staple of the Columbus community, Block’s Hot Bagels will be pausing operations indefinitely following the passing of its founder, Harold ‘Hal’ Block. This challenging decision comes as the family takes time to reflect and grieve, while also recognizing that with no other Block family members actively involved in the business and the bakery’s lease coming to an end, this was a natural moment for transition. While this marks a significant change, it is also an opportunity to celebrate the incredible legacy that Hal and his wife, Audrey Block, built—one of hard-work, dedication, and a love for bringing people together through fresh, hot bagels and schmear.
Hal and Audrey Block founded Block’s Hot Bagels to bring a piece of their hometown, New York City, to Columbus, Ohio. As the business grew, their son, Steven Block, joined them in their mission, helping to expand and strengthen what became a cherished local institution. Together, they built a business rooted in quality, tradition, and a deep connection to the community.
The Block family is incredibly grateful for the love and support we’ve received during this time and over nearly sixty years of serving this community. The family would also like to extend their deepest gratitude to the many employees who have been part of Block’s Hot Bagels over the years. Their hard work, talent, and dedication helped make Block’s what it is—a place where people feel at home and leave with something warm and fresh, both in hand and in heart. To our many thousands of customers over the years, it has been an honor to serve you and your families.
Though the McNaughten Road location will close, the legacy of Block’s Hot Bagels—its commitment to quality, tradition, and bringing people together—will live on in the Columbus community. The family remains hopeful and looks forward to exploring ways to carry forward Hal, Audrey, and Steven’s passion for baking kosher bagels and fostering connection. This is not goodbye, but an opportunity to explore how Block’s can continue to serve Columbus in the future.
Updates on the future of Block’s Hot Bagels will be shared in the future. Until then, the family thanks the Columbus community for their continued support and understanding. Block’s last day at the McNaughten Road location will be Sunday, March 2.
