On Christmas night through freezing rain, howling wind, and frigid temperatures George Washington and thousands of extraordinary men executed a daring river crossing and subsequent surprise attack on Hessian mercenaries in Trenton, NewJersey.

An act that not only secured key military victories but boosted patriot spirit, marking a key turning point in the fight for independence.

On this day in 1944, as the first wave of boats approached Omaha Beach, it’s almost impossible to understand the fear, or comprehend the courage required to take those first steps.

Every man that landed on the beach or parachuted behind enemy lines on D-Day is a hero who should be celebrated.

They acted not as conquerors of foreign lands, but as liberators, returning to the people what was wrongfully seized.

PVT Zanatta was 20 years old when he stormed the beach and the horrors of war fell upon him. When he was later asked by his daughter how he dealt with the death of so many friends on that day, he simply answered, “You did what you had to do. And you kept on going”.

Today, we remember their many sacrifices, and we celebrate their triumph.
