Sometimes a bear will pause and take in the scenery.

On riverbanks or high ridges, you might spot a brown figure settling onto its haunches, quietly gazing over mountains, lakes, or the setting sun.

It can seem almost human — though scientists caution against assuming we know what’s on a bear’s mind. What we do know is that they often stop to rest and scan their surroundings. Stillness helps them stay safe.

Those long, steady looks are a form of vigilance. From a good vantage point, a bear’s eyes, ears, and nose can work at their best. Taking time to sit calmly is an effective survival strategy.

Bears also have some ability to see color. Research shows they possess two types of cone cells, so their view is less vivid than ours, but they still perceive shape, depth, and contrast.

So when we see a bear “watching the sunset,” it may be assessing its world — or perhaps simply finding a moment of peace. Either way, it’s a scene worth safeguarding: a wild creature at ease in a wild place.

Eighth-grade students at Schoenbar Middle School in Ketchikan, Alaska, take part in a unique end-of-year tradition: an overnight survival trip to a remote, uninhabited island as part of their science curriculum.

This program has been running for over four decades and is designed to test students on practical wilderness skills they’ve learned throughout the year, such as shelter building, fire-making, orienteering, and food safety.

The Kenai River is renowned for its king salmon, which are notably large, often exceeding 40 pounds. In 1985, the river produced the world record for the largest sport-caught king salmon, weighing in at 97 pounds and 4 ounces. This remarkable catch contributed to the Kenai River's reputation as a premier fishing destination. The river supports major runs of king, sockeye, coho, and pink salmon, making it a favored spot for anglers seeking diverse fishing experiences. > https://tripmemos.com/spots-for-fishing-in-alaska/?utm_medium=organic&utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=ma
