I will be sending the following to town council in advance of Tuesday's meeting to get support of the b**r garden permit for the Merry Market organized through Community Roots Farmers Market . If you would like you name added, which is appreciated if you support us, please message me with your name and address to be included. I don't usually ask for support with a personal project. Coventry is tough, we do not have a central shopping /market area to do small biz promotions. This was the best I could do. Other than I am also vending, I am not getting compensation for this...ok maybe I'm also like let's bring in commerical tax base to save residential taxes 🤣. But this is the type of stuff I want to see in town, if someone else organized it, I want them to win too.
Dear Members of the Coventry Town Council,
We respectfully ask for your support in approving a Class F liquor license for the b**r garden at the Merry Market, held at Coventry Gardens on Tiogue Avenue, Saturdays from November 21 through December 19, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.
The Merry Market is a truly local shopping experience, bringing together Coventry farms, small businesses, artisans, and families for a festive holiday event. Approximately 85–90% of the vendors participating on any given market day are Coventry farms and businesses.
From the beginning, we have welcomed Coventry businesses to participate and have made it clear that Coventry businesses receive preferential consideration when selecting vendors. Our goal is to create opportunities for the businesses that call Coventry home, giving them a platform to reach new customers, build relationships, and grow their presence in the community. This is not simply a market located in Coventry; it is a market intentionally designed to support Coventry. Our call for vendors is currently closed, but we made several attempts to first connect with Coventry businesses before looking outside of town. In addition, we have connected with the now amazing businesses at the "pen mill building" and are cross promoting their Dec 5th open house as a "don't leave Coventry challenge" (side note- we welcome are restaurants who want to offer a special that day to reach out).
The economic benefits of shopping local are significant. Research highlighted by the American Independent Business Alliance found that approximately 48% of revenue from purchases at independent local businesses recirculates within the local economy, compared with less than 14% at chain retailers. That means more money can support local jobs, local suppliers, other small businesses, and community organizations. When residents choose to shop with local farms and businesses, the benefits extend far beyond the initial purchase.
The market is organized at no cost to participating Coventry businesses. In addition to supporting our local economy, these businesses are generously donating raffle items to benefit Beyond the Battle, a local organization that supports veterans. Beyond the Battle has made a meaningful difference in our community, including helping a veteran in Greene who experienced a housing problem. We are proud to bring local businesses together in support of an organization that helps our neighbors when they need it most.
We recognize that this may be a new type of event for Coventry, but we see it as an opportunity to demonstrate what can happen when local businesses collaborate to create engaging, family-friendly experiences. Our hope is that the Merry Market will help establish a model for future community events that bring people together, support small businesses, and provide meaningful benefits without placing a financial burden on the town.
A vibrant small-business community does more than support individual entrepreneurs. It creates destinations for residents, encourages people to spend their money locally, strengthens community relationships, and helps make Coventry an attractive place for businesses of all sizes to establish themselves and grow.
We respectfully ask the Town Council to support the Class F liquor license so that the b**r garden can be part of this holiday celebration. Your support would help us create a welcoming community gathering that celebrates local entrepreneurship, encourages collaboration, and gives back to an organization serving our veterans.
We hope this event can be the beginning of many more opportunities for Coventry farms, small businesses, community organizations, and local venues to work together. By investing in collaboration and supporting local entrepreneurs, we can build a more vibrant community that benefits residents and businesses alike—all without adding costs to Coventry taxpayers.
Thank you for your consideration and for your continued commitment to the Coventry community.
Sincerely,
Stacie Nichols
