Hierophany & Hedge

We’re not sure if the weather is to blame, but this hasn’t really felt like October.

Or, rather, it’s just now finally starting to feel like October, but we only have a week left. That isn’t nearly enough time for ghosts or for goblins.

We haven’t decided, but we may just extend October for another month or two. Magic.

So long as the season of the witch persists, be careful of boons sought out with mirror and candle.

We’ll be open this Friday (10/30) from 6-8pm, Saturday (10/31) from 12-5pm and 6-8pm, and Sunday (11/1) from 12-4pm.

Costumes are always welcome, but particularly this weekend.

Bring your magnifying glass and practice your buttling, because our theme for Saturday night is the board game Clue.

The Covington Cryptid Block Party returns to Pike Street this Saturday, October 24th, for a triumphal fifth year!

There will be more vendors, more snacks, more musicians, more clowns, and, most importantly, more cryptids!!!

Expect to see:

The Ominous Mothman!
The Elusive Bigfoot!
The Indescribable Octoman!
And, visiting from Loveland, the Frogman and his Sparking Wand!
If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the Covington Goat Girl!
(In order to preserve everyone’s sanity, and to avoid a Class 12B apocalypse, the Roebling Catfish will NOT be attending.)

The Covington Annual Cryptid Block Party team and Circ Lædere have been working hard all year to produce an event that will be a delight for the whole family!

The festivities will be centered (on both Pike and 7th Street) around Hierophany & Hedge. We hope that you’ll be able to join us in celebrating all these wonderful monsters!

We recently had the pleasure of celebrating the wedding of our shop witch, Eleanor.

It was held at a delightfully spooky farm in the Hocking Hills, and while the newlyweds were off getting their familial photos, Curio discovered a glade of artfully decaying pianos. The instruments were slowly losing a battle to water and fungi.

Never ones to miss any excuse to run terrified through the woods, we immediately enlisted Siswrn’s help in recreating Phantom of the Opera as folk horror.

Now, of course, we can’t stop thinking about the obvious parallels between Phantom and The King in Yellow.

Thank you all for indulging us.

We’ll be open this Friday (10/16) from 6-8pm, Saturday (10/17) from 12-5pm, and Sunday (10/18) from 12-4pm.

Our many thanks to the artists, organizers, donors, and visitors who made BLINK Cincinnati possible.

We had a wonderful weekend entertaining thousands of people who stopped by for a bit of candlelight.

We are already looking forward to 2028.

As we ready a troublingly large number of (electric) candles for BLINK Cincinnati, we wanted to pause to celebrate one of the sponsoring institutions that made the possible.

is a legendary Cincinnati institution with traditions stretching back nearly two centuries.

Like all libraries, it is a place of magic.

It is open to the public. Go visit.

Oh, and the lovely facade in the opening shot is at Garfield Place, it is not the (also lovely) Mercantile Building.

See you at BLINK!

As the sun sets on the 2026 Cincy Bookstore Crawl we want to thank the organizers whose commitment made the event possible, our incredible shop witches who went far above and beyond anything we could have asked of them, and the tens of thousands of people who came out to support independent bookstores in our community.

The world is brighter because of you.

Our daughters are pretty grumpy about having been left out of the fun, but it’s nothing that a heaping mound of treats can’t fix.

This week we will be open for usual operation on Saturday (10/10) from 12-5pm, and Sunday (10/11) from 12-4pm.

We also plan to be open from about 7-10:30 on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for BLINK Cincinnati.

We don’t know what the crowds will be like, and we may need to adjust our evening hours and services to ensure safety and preserve sanity.

In the dark near future (starting in about an hour), literate survivors will navigate a post-apocalyptic wasteland (greater Cincinnati), stumbling from bookstore to bookstore in search of resources to endure a world governed by malfunctioning A.I. (that’s just 2026).

Will any have what it takes to survive in BOOK! CRAWLER! WORLD!

Good luck, Crawlers! Now get out there and READ! READ! READ!

Thanks again to wickedwhaleart who created this delightful animation to celebrate the Cincy Bookstore Crawl weekend!

Make sure you get over to our friends at Blue Marble Books, and don’t forget to grab some snacks (Donuts and virgin dirty Shirleys) from North South Baking Co , Left Bank , or ourcauldroncafe

In celebration of it finally being October, we offer you a video of some of our favorite monuments at Spring Grove Cemetery.

This local wonder was created in the mid-nineteenth century as part of the garden cemetery movement. In response to ill-maintained and overcrowded urban cemeteries, developers built scenic mortuary parks where the wealthy could posture even after death.

While those industrialists and generals are long forgotten, their monuments remain at a site now so redolent with gothic charm that it’s impossible to do anything other than swoon dramatically against crumbling statuary and await one’s vampire lover. Or maybe that is just us.

It’s also a wonderfully maintained arboretum, and you’re more likely to encounter a dryad or swan maiden than grim spectre . . . well, everywhere except around the Burnet Mausoleum.

Happy Almost-Halloween to you all!

You’re invited to join Hierophany & Hedge , Blue Marble Books ,
Roebling Books & Coffee ,
Poor Charlotte , and many more independent book shops this weekend for the Cincy Bookstore Crawl

We are looking forward to welcoming old friends as well as first time visitors to the celebration!

Last year this event was quite busy, so we’ve made a few changes in order to accommodate crowds.

As always, our wrapping service will be provided free of charge, but if anyone doesn’t want to wait, there will be a second checkout line for those who just want to get their books and go.

There will also be a dedicated station for anyone who only wants to get their book craw passport stamped.

Many thanks to wickedwhaleart for creating this poster for us!

We’ll be open Friday (10/2) from 11a-8pm, Saturday (10/3) from 10a-5pm, and Sunday (10/4) from 10a-5pm.
