Introducing: Pints, Pretzels, & Prairie Tales

At The Frontier Frau, we love the stories, traditions, history, and craftsmanship behind what we do. That's why we're launching Pints, Pretzels, & Prairie Tales—a new limited series where we'll occasionally share interesting facts and history about beer, food, and more.

For our first tale, we want to talk about a simple tool that played a big role in brewing history: the mash paddle.

The first step of the brewing process involves hydrating crushed barley with water to form the "mash." This mixture must be stirred to ensure even hydration, consistency, and temperature distribution. While modern, large-scale brewers use motorized mash rakes, a mash paddle is an effective, traditional way to accomplish this. The classic mash paddle (or mash fork) features a long wooden pole with a spade-like end and holes that allow the mash to flow through as it is stirred. Mash paddles can be seen in historical artwork depicting brewing and you can also find them at The Frontier Frau, in both our art and our operations. We use a mash paddle at The Frontier Frau not because it's traditional or romantic, but because it's affordable (and our brewer's shoulders still work...for now). Our current mash paddle, made by David White, has now been through dozens of brews and has held up beautifully - a testament to David's craftsmanship!

We were honored to brew and provide the special beer for the 2026 Cattlemen's Ball in Cozad last weekend. We would like to especially thank Levi & Bobbie Jo Messersmith and the Benjamin family for having us and fellow restaurant owner, Kristen Bennett, for her leadership in overseeing the bar operations. Between the hard work and vision of these leaders and countless hours of so many volunteers, the community gave 110% to further cancer research efforts and we are so proud to be a part of it.
