It's that time of year that the Tertiary Earth Beavers make their mounds for the coming winter. Their scientific names are Castor Zucker Eraticus and they are divided into the Greater and Lessor, based on how many young they typically deliver. They are starting to appear all over the Red River Valley. Here, under this warming mound of soil the Mother Beaver will spend the first part of winter and finally in the coldest moment, give birth to either 2 or 4 and very rarely 6 young KITS. They are born fully furred and with their eyes open. The kits stay with their family group, or colony, for about two years before leaving to start their own territories. Through the winter they will be building longer and longer burrows as they look for any succulent sugar beets that were left in the harvested fields. Scientists have said that it's best not to disturb the mound if there's a chance of a family dwelling inside.
