We set out for a quick weekend escape, but the mountains had different plans.
Three miles up into the rugged backcountry, a sudden summer storm slammed into the peak. The wind howled, the temperature plummeted, and the trail vanished under a sheet of blinding rain.
That’s when Max, my German Shepherd, went into full work mode. Standing tall against the wind, he used his sharp instincts to track the faint scent of the old logging trail through the mud, leading us straight to a small, hidden rock cave just as the heavy hail started.
The storm cleared by morning, giving way to absolute perfection. We woke up to brilliant, warm sunshine breaking over the cloud line. I fired up the camp stove, poured a steaming brew into my favorite Java Junkies Coffee, and sat there watching the sun hit the peaks with my best friend.
It wasn't the peaceful weekend I planned, but waking up to that view made every mile worth it. There is no better trail partner. Next time, I'm letting him pack the gear. 🏔️🐕
