From the wife of our club member Steve Ellingson, who lives on Maui regarding the massive wildfires there.
I would greatly appreciate it if you could share this Go-Fund Me link with anyone that may be able to support Lahaina Divers crew with a donation, but also wanted to express some personal experiences. FYI this fund was set up by the LD owners, but everything collected will go to the crew, not the business. My husband Steve is/was the Director of Operations at LD, a company with a tight knit crew who love to gather for beach days and adventure dives on their days off, supported by involved owners at the head of the family. The day of the fire, power and phones were already out as people started to arrive at work. That, combined with wind, meant no diving or store operations were going to happen. People were looking forward to a "snow" day- or unexpected time off as Steve headed home to Haiku around lunch. Little did we all know that shortly many of our friends would literally be running for their lives to escape the devastating fires, some with just the clothes they were wearing. Conditions worsened, and Steve began notifying customers not to go to Lahaina the following day. As day turned into evening news of fires got increasingly worse. We realized fires had moved into town, headed toward the ocean. There was no way to contact crew in Lahaina. I won't go into the horrific details, but they are etched in our brains. There was no notice to evacuate. There was some anguish over initial news reports claiming 6 dead, as all that were there saw the losses all around them. The count will continue to grow in the days and weeks ahead. Frantic hours were spent trying to account for everyone. Most of the crew lost their homes and possessions, and everyone lost the job they love. But thankfully everyone was safe, though one pet perished. Crew who lived north of Lahaina took in those who escaped the fire, but no one had electricity or water. Cell service was spotty, so one of the gang hiked to a high point to relay messages and get information. Once allowed to leave, the group caravanned out of Lahaina, and we were able to connect them up with some basic supplies. The friends continue to gather for fellowship and family style meals, now in Wailuku, because this wasn't just their livelihood, but also their community. Talking about the what they witnessed, the devastation, loss and carnage, is cathartic. But the love and humor is still there. We miss the ones that temporarily had to leave this island. Since Lahaina Harbor and all of the boats burned, there is no work. We haven't really begun to process riding out months on an expensive island, but somehow still have faith. We (hopefully) look forward to when things get back to time on the water and a sensitively rebuilt Lahaina town. We hope your ohana is safe. Take care of each other out there ❤
