Well hello there, rainy Thursday. You finally decided to show up with just enough drizzle to cool the air a smidge — not enough to make anybody reach for a jacket, but enough to make the porch boards smell like they remember spring.
And y’all already know what today is. It ain’t just Thursday. It’s Thanksgiving Thursday, the day we set aside every month to slow down, breathe deep, and be thankful for where we’re standin’, who we’re standin’ with, and how far the good Lord has carried us.
Now listen… today I’m thankful for a whole heap of things, but one blessing is sittin’ right at the top of the pile like the prettiest deviled egg on the platter — Renee.
Our anniversary is this weekend, and even though we don’t make a big fuss or run off somewhere fancy, we always take a minute to look at each other and say, “Hey… I’m glad it’s still you.” We reflect on the years — the wild ones, the quiet ones, the ones that nearly took us out, and the ones that stitched us back together.
Renee has stood beside me when nobody had any business standin’ there lookin’ crazy with me. She has never told me no — not to an idea, not to a project, not to a hobby, not even to the questionable ones that made her tilt her head like a confused puppy. She might shake her head, she might sigh, she might mutter under her breath, but she’s all in, even when the dream wasn’t hers to begin with.
Now don’t get it twisted — it ain’t been all sunshine and roses. Between us we’ve got four kids and a whole mess of grandbabies, and some days we barely see each other except in passing, usually talkin’ about the restaurant. Go figure.
But it’s been a wild, crooked, beautiful ride, and I’ve learned more lessons — good and bad — than I can count. So here’s to you, Renee. Happy early anniversary, my partner in chaos, calm, and everything in between.
And those pretty red flowers bloomin’ on the back deck? The ones showin’ out like they know they’re somethin’ special? They came from our house — just a couple lonely stems nine years ago, now grown into four big ol’ pots like they’re tryin’ to take over the place. Funny how things flourish when you tend to ’em, even on the days you don’t feel like you’re doin’ much at all.
