Fritz and Otto helped move the sheep home from the neighbors and, boy, did they ever enjoy herding!

Otto is still learning that the goal is to keep them together. Fortunately his big brother was there to help out!

Look at this beautiful rainbow that just appeared tonight!

As we all know…life isn’t always sunshine and rainbows.

For the past year, Fritz has attended Little Farmers Preschool and Daycare. Allison and Josh provide exceptional care and educational opportunities to the children in their care. The kids get to learn about nature from their 5 acre property, eat organically grown food from the garden, incubate chicks, make blackcap jam...I could go on and on about all the wonderful things they do. Of course the kids learn letters and numbers but they also learn, the arguably more important lessons, about how to be part of a community and take care of one another.

As small business owners, Josh and Allison literally dedicate their lives to nurturing the children in their care and put a ton of energy, creativity and time into their work. They are always the first ones to offer help when anybody is going through a tough time. We had a few family emergencies this winter/spring and they were quick to offer help with our kids (on the weekends!) if we were in need of anything. They are just really good people who show up for their community.

We'll let you read their full story via their GoFundMe page but the short story is that they need some financial support to be able to care for one of their own children. https://www.gofundme.com/f/years-of-medical-challenges-hope-is-near-for-kyla-family?modal=donations&tab=all

Tom and I are excited to share that this weekend (July 10/11) we will be donating 10% of gross pizza sales to the Phillips Family. It brings us joy to be able to reciprocate a small amount of the generosity and love that Allison and Josh exude through their work. The more pizzas we sell, the greater the amount of support we can provide to the Phillips Family, so come on out! All you need to do is make a reservation and show up to eat some pizza! We'll handle the rest. 😉

With all the rain and humidity, we're watching everything grow right before our eyes! Every morning the kids do a "garden check" to see what changed overnight. And it's truly remarkable to see how fast plants grow and change this time of year. Also...the pasture daisies are blooming and our family loves when the pasture daisies are blooming. 🙂

Summer appears to be here to stay. Last night we took a steamy walk up to the highest point of our farm where there's a small piece of remnant prairie and a few wild strawberries. We discovered some beautiful spiderwort last year and wanted too see if it was blooming. The report: Spiderwort is close to blooming and the wild strawberries are ripe! After the ease (and fun!) of picking berries at our local strawberry farm last night, we really enjoyed the treasure hunt that wild strawberries provide.

This week's pizza menu features local ingredients such as arugula (thank you, Sweet Season Farm!), sugar snap peas, basil and asparagus. Favorite pizzas such as the Margherita, Iowa Margherita and Holy Pepperoni are back on tap and we've cooked up a new one that we're calling "Spring Green" and it very much captures the flavors of early summer.

We blinked and somehow our first live music event of 2026 is less than 3 weeks away! There are still tickets available for The Lowest Pair / Little Fevers Sunday Session on June 28th and we'd love to see you! We plan to stop selling tickets on Sunday, June 21st which means you have 10 days to snag them!

We look forward to seeing you here this weekend or whenever life allows you to join us here on our small farm.

P.S. There will be a film crew here this Friday! Let's show 'em how we pizza farm!

Fritz and I had a great time picking beautiful (and very tasty!) strawberries at Wold Strawberries this afternoon! They’re officially open for the season!

Strawberry season is here! It’s time to eat the heck out of them!

Speaking of seasonal foods, our pizza menu for this weekend features arugula, asparagus and sugar snap peas! So many tasty things to eat, so little time. 😉

See ya this weekend?

On Sunday afternoon we loaded up the canoes, kids, a set of Grandparents, lots of snacks and hit the river! We paddled our favorite (very remote) stretch of the Upper Iowa River where we've hardly ever seen another soul.

Our trip was filled with questions about why there was a canoe stuck in the bank and how a kayak got to the bottom of the river. We chased eagles down the river and embellished the small rapids we encountered.

We swam, threw rocks into the river and ate turkey and cheese sandwiches on a very rocky beach. We abandoned cell service, our bottomless to-do lists and all cares in the world and sank deeply into Sunday afternoon.

And I think it was every bit what we needed at this busy time of the year.

We invite you to sink deeply into Sunday afternoon on June 28th. Please join us for live music, pizza and community here on the farm! It's not the river but we can almost guarantee it'll be just as relaxing and fun!

We are offering two Sunday afternoon shows this year and when you buy tickets and June 1st is the deadline to order tickets to both and receive a discount!

If you're familiar with the local treasure that is Malanaphy Springs, you likely know what a special place it is, especially in the springtime. A few Wednesdays ago I picked the kids up early from preschool/daycare and we went on an adventure. As we walked the 0.8 miles back to the waterfall at Malanaphy Springs, Fritz, Otto and I were all totally captivated by the way the woods had come alive with a diversity of wildflowers. Everywhere we looked, there were all kinds of flowers and they are all so beautiful, especially if you look closely and savored the details of each plant.

At one point (and maybe still?), Malanaphy Springs had the most diverse wildflowers in the state of Iowa! This place has probably always been a gem but a local botanist and many others have spent many hours, year after year, tending this delicate landscape and removing plants like garlic mustard to allow the wildflowers to thrive. Because of the joy and passion of local scientists, lovers of nature and students, we now all have this place where we can wander in wonder.

Thank you to all who have tended with care this local gem a place to walk! Another spreader of joy was the Luther Botany student who was celebrating his birthday with a walk the night we were hiking, and took time to listen to our children's questions about the plants they were seeing and share what he knew.

When someone comes up to the pizza bar and asks if they can get out their giant bubble equipment to blow bubbles on pizza night, the answer will probably always be yes. And Saturday night turned out to be so sweet that we simply didn't want it to end. For what felt like hours, giant bubbles were floating across the barn lawn, being chased by children of all ages. The sheep were grazing in the bottom, the cattle were on the hillside and the magic of the bubbles just made the night feel perfect in all ways.

The giant bubble enthusiast shared that he's never done it for hire or for tips...just for joy. And that makes us so happy!

To our pizza guest who brought your giant bubble equipment...THANK YOU! Thank you for spreading joy in the form of bubbles and for so freely sharing your recipe and tips for making the giant wand!

It felt SO GOOD to finally be open last weekend! If we're being honest, we really miss seeing you over the winter and always eagerly await your first trip out for pizza! Last weekend, folks traveled from near and far to enjoy the season opener with us. Some celebrated birthdays and confirmations, others celebrated spring, togetherness and perhaps the end of a long week. No matter what brings you here, we are always happy to see you!

Tom had a group of ewes and lambs in the pasture along the pizza trail and we enjoyed seeing everyone's excitement at observing them. The new sand play area was bursting with kids of all ages and that brought us so much joy! It felt so great to have so many of our favorite people back on our farm and many here for the first time ever!
