History of BBQ in Bryson, TN


Willard & Geraldine Russell purchased the land and built Russell’s BBQ opening in January 1965. Russell ran the pit until his retirement in 1988 when he sold the pit to Bobby & Sandra Burnham. The Burnham's operated under the same name and added a small indoor seating area. Bobby passed away in December of 1993 and the business closed. Sandra Burnham sold the pit to

Bo & Jane Witt of Dellrose in April 1997. Bo reopened the pit and operated as Bo’s Corner Pit for several years until it burned completely the day after Christmas 2002. He rebuilt a larger building keeping the indoor pit area where some of the cooking still took place. After a couple of years Bo retired and leased the business to various individuals. During the last lease the indoor pits caught fire the week of July 4th, 2008 closing the business. He and his wife put the business up for sale and it was purchased in late July 2008 by Bill & Kristen Pfeiffer of Dellrose. The Pfeiffer's purchased a smoker, which is a solely wood-fired pit and Corner Pit BBQ was re-opened May 16, 2009.

This Father’s Day weekend, we’re celebrating a man who wears many hats — pitmaster, dad, and Papa. ❤️

Bill has spent years showing love to his family through hard work, laughter, and plenty of meals gathered around the table. Being a father and a Papa is one of his greatest joys.

While many fathers get to sit back and relax this weekend, Bill will be right where he loves to be — tending the pit and cooking up hickory-smoked BBQ to help make other dads’ Father’s Day celebrations a little more special.

From our Corner Pit BBQ family to yours, we wish all the dads, granddads, stepdads, and father figures a very happy Father’s Day weekend. Thank you for the love, guidance, and sacrifices you make every day.

🎉 Happy Birthday to our very own Gately! 🎉

It’s hard to believe our daughter has been part of the Corner Pit BBQ story since just before her third birthday. She has literally grown up in this business — from playing around the restaurant as a little girl to becoming someone who knows every corner, every job, and the heart behind what we do.

Gately has spent a lifetime watching the smoker roll, serving customers, helping our crew, and jumping in wherever she’s needed. She truly knows this business inside and out, and we are so proud of the hardworking, kind, and incredible young woman she has become.

Today, she’s celebrating her birthday at Sundrop Fest! 💚🍋 If you see her out and about, stop her, snap a selfie with the birthday girl, and help us shower her with birthday wishes.

There’s a tradition in the home of Sundrop — every second Saturday in June, we celebrate that sweet, citrusy, lemon-lime drink that has been part of our community for generations! 🥤☀️

The smoker is rolling, the BBQ will be ready, and in just a few hours the Giles County Square will be buzzing with nearly 14,000 people celebrating all things Sundrop!

Before you head downtown, load up the family and swing by Corner Pit BBQ for lunch! Ella and Gately will be kicking off the morning by running the 5K, and then we’ll be serving up your favorite hickory-smoked BBQ before the afternoon festivities begin.

Enjoy a day full of music, Sundrop, friends, and small-town fun!

Please note: We will be closing at 2:00 PM today so our amazing employees can join in the celebration too.

Six years ago this Memorial Day weekend, we were short an employee and made a call to Ella’s mom asking if she could help us out at the BBQ pit. At just 14 years old, she showed up ready to work… and she’s been part of our BBQ family ever since ❤️🔥

For the past 16 years, Ella has been part of our lives, and for the last 6 years she has blessed our restaurant with her hard work, sweet spirit, and smiling face 😊 Watching her grow from a shy young girl into the outgoing, customer-service superstar she is today has been such a joy for all of us! 👏🍖

Ella, thank you for all the laughs, the long days, the dedication, and the love you pour into our BBQ family. We are so proud of the young woman you’ve become and so thankful God placed you in our lives ❤️

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO… US!

17 years ago, our family took over the pits here on the Corner! We’ve seen floods, fires, pandemics, and political unrest (beer permit draaaaama 🙄)

We’ve also seen birthdays, class/family reunions, marriages, funerals. We’ve met friendly faces from all over the world as they’ve passed through.

We want to THANK YOU for all the support you’ve given us over the years, and grace when we’ve made mistakes. We hope to be here for another 17!
