The Woodmen Circle Home in Sherman, Texas, was much more than a beautiful building—it was a place of hope. Opened in 1930, it provided a safe home for orphaned children and elderly members of the Woodmen Circle organization during some of the country's most challenging years. Over the decades, hundreds of lives were touched within its walls before it closed in the early 1970s.
After it was abandoned, the building took on a life of its own in local folklore. For many Sherman teenagers, exploring the old Woodmen Circle Home became almost a rite of passage. Friends would dare each other to sneak inside its empty halls, drawn by the mystery and the stories that surrounded it. Some believed the building was haunted, while others simply loved the thrill of exploring such an iconic place. Whether you went looking for ghosts or just an adventure, almost everyone who grew up around Sherman has a story about the Woodmen Circle Home.
Although the building is no longer standing, its history—and the memories and legends it inspired—live on through photographs like this one.
