In my own experience with 15 years of taking care of a special needs child this is some honest tips I can provide:

1. Use reward system where you provide small preferred rewards.
2. Teach child deep breathing techniques.
3. If child is upset before engaging allow child opportunity to sit and calm
down.
4. Rewards tend to work better than consequences.
5. Keep a reward chart.
