I'm not sure how to say this, especially so publicly. We're struggling to stay in business. As we head into our 4th year, we're facing the stark reality that we are not staying ahead of our ever-increasing operating expenses.
We have invested our life savings, borrowed, traded, collaborated, and borrowed some more, and yet find ourselves facing the very real possibility of closing the doors at Tide Pool Coffeehouse and Salish Sea Yarn Co this winter.
We started with a dream of a small yarn store bringing together a community of islanders over the love of creating. We hoped to create a space to inspire and encourage each other to make with our hands and be present with our selves. With your encouragement and support, we expanded this dream to open a larger space to come together over coffee and crafts. We have personally shared so many moments with many of you these last few years that we cherish. Sharing your joy, celebrating milestones, and listening or encouraging where we could has also enriched our lives. One of our favorite comments recently is, "this space is like Orcas' living room".
We currently employ 21 islanders between our bakery, coffee house and fiber store. We are not motivated by making money. We pride ourselves on the energetic, welcoming, respectful, and safe space we've created for our staff and our guests. We are open 7 days a week, year-round and serve as the "third place" that isn't work or home. (Although sometimes it does feel like *we* live here!)
It feels nearly impossible to even ask our community for help at this time. We know that a lot of small and local businesses are struggling. We've seen the empty store fronts in downtown Friday Harbor and Anacortes. We know that individuals and families on our island are struggling to make ends meet already.
It has been a period of unprecedented increases in costs. The cost of ingredients, shipping, deliveries, ferries (!@ #$), water, electricity... it adds up quickly. The interest rate on our mortgage is at 10%, almost double where we started.
We are hesitant to ask for your help, and yet, we also don't want to be silent and close our doors ...(cont'd in comments)
