5 years ago, we embarked on a journey that feels like a lifetime ago. Our story starts much earlier than that. Before we opened our doors, we had watched several businesses open and close in Edgewood. We saw large names and small moving out of the community. As our local Friendlys closed in April 2016, we couldn't help but notice one thing. Many of the patrons were there for one thing; the ice cream. Whether scoops or in milkshake form, the very last days of Friendlys in Edgewood seemed to center around a cold sweet treat. Having grown up in a family that made ice cream, the idea of being in an area with so many families that wouldn't experience the small joy in life of getting some ice cream after the game, at the end of the school year, after the spring musical, the first day of summer, or the last... it all seemed wrong. So we decided to get to work. After years of planning and saving, we thought we had it figured out. We dove in head first, and hit a brick wall. While we were founded in 2020, there was one very unexpected turn of events that prevented us from opening. Our original soft launch was going to be in May 2020, a full four years after the closure of our local Friendlys. Instead, the COVID19 pandemic shut down small businesses left and right. We had to make a decision. Do we throw in the towel, or do we wait it out? So we waited. And waited. And waited. Finally, as things returned to normal in May 2021, we launched a flavor test day. Within three hours of announcing, we filled our 200 vacant spots with excited patrons before we had ever served a scoop, a cone, a shake. The feedback we received was invaluable, and our staff had a small preview of what was to come. We opened Memorial Day weekend of 2021, and sold out completely by 8pm. Every. Single. Night. And again, and again and again. For 5 weeks straight, we couldn't make ice cream fast enough. Our milk supplier couldn't keep up. Our staff doubled; it had to. We handed out free bottles of water to patrons in line who waited for over an hour to support us. We are so grateful they did. An ice cream shop that hadn't existed a month ago now had thousands of social media followers, and community organizations reaching out left and right. We then had two huge moments. A family was kind enough to suggest we make a flavor they could never find anywhere; Ube. We worked on it, changing the flavor profile over and over until they claimed it was just right. And the community agreed. Ube was an immediate best seller, and a flavor that made us stand out. Then another break. An employee asked if there was a way we could make Banana Pudding ice cream. Three HOURS later, we had our third test batch done. Every person that tried it agreed, it was a hit. Social media blew up about it. One amateur photo later, over twenty thousand people had liked our post about Banana Pudding. We started getting folks from out of town coming to Edgewood just for the ice cream. Then our Strawberry Cheesecake. Our Apple Pie. Pumpkin Spice. Chocolate Hazelnut Nutella. We couldn't stop making great ice cream, and the community couldn't stop coming back for more. We were, and are, incredibly grateful.
From fundraisers for soccer, softball, baseball, and lacrosse teams, to the Ice Cream University program at Edgewood High, to our support of the Stage Boosters, the Edgewood Boys and Girls Club, PTA/PTOs of 8 local schools, and so many other great partnerships, we couldn't be more grateful to be a trusted, loved, and supported small business in this great community.
We hope we've made the past five years just a little sweeter for Edgewood. We look forward to serving this community as long as we can.
