With there only being two (heavily) bred mamas left to calve in our herd, it’s become the routine to take the Gator and check the herd every evening to make sure we haven’t missed a new one during the day.

Surprise!!
Dossie finally released her hostage, a beautiful little heifer, now named Darla!
Dossie is out of Uno, and was actually the first heifer born on this property when we moved up here in 2022. We joke that Uno’s genetics only produce heifers, and given Uno’s last bull calf was in 2016, and her heifers have exclusively thrown heifers, we may just end up with an entire herd of female Uno offspring😂
One more mama to finish out the 2026 calving season!

Sunshine this week means we’re chugging along in the hay fields, the garden is blooming, and the blackberries are ripening!
Starting to feel a bit like June around here!

Arnold has integrated quickly and joined the “Hog Hike” for mealtime. The floppy ears give me great joy😂

Funny farm story of the day:
Background: I’m first generation in farming (Phoebe). Ben is fourth generation. I grew up in suburban upstate SC and found my way into a barn and subsequently farming as quickly as I could😂

My parents came up to the farm to visit Sunday afternoon. A quiet day of lunch and catching up, Dad got to take some pictures of critters and pick up some fresh eggs (read: I sent them home with 13 dozen eggs lol).
Upon leaving, we got to the front porch and I went “oh, there’s Arnold, the new boar” and pointed him out along the fence-line in the pig paddock.
Arnold took that to mean he should demonstrate his manly abilities and give my folks a show on how pig breeding works🥴. Needless to say, they quickly said goodbyes and got in their car😂
Joys of farm life, I guess 🙃

Pictured: Petunia, the current object of Arnold’s amorous affections🐽😘

Get you a husband that’ll w**d your chaos garden for you😘
5” of rain in a week and the w**ds had turned my garden into a jungle, and given my propensity to crowd too many plants into too close of rows (I’ll accept no criticism), we were quite literally hacking through w**ds to even find the plants😂
At 20 weeks pregnant, I can only bend so far and stay bent for so long, so ever grateful for Ben. Everyone needs a Ben, but get your own, this one’s booked for the foreseeable future😂

Welcoming Arnold to the happy ham club! Arnold is a lovely, young, proven Tamworth/Large Black boar, a perfect addition to our pastured pork operation and a complement to our mixed breed heritage gilts! Annie and Petunia are already very curious about their future bacon baby daddy 🥓🐷

Also, yes, I do name my critters. Arnold is paying homage to the hog from Green Acres with the same moniker😂

The girls have been thoroughly enjoying the muddy aftermath of the past week of rain, but we told them they had to clean up a little today because we were headed out to bring them home a surprise! Any guesses?

If there’s one thing we have an abundance of on this farm, it’s wild blackberries! While we’ve cleared them out of the horse pastures and arena and the other 4 million places they were growing, we’ve let them run wild on an old barbed wire fence in the cow pasture. And every summer, we stain our hands purple with fresh berries, make jams and cobblers, and feed quite a few of them back to the very spoiled cows!
