Leading up to our Aug. 12th Wine Dinner with Orin Swift Cellars , we are going to feature one wine a week. Every wine we are featuring has a really cool story and thought it would be really neat to share them weekly!

MANNEQUIN Chardonnay

The inspiration didn’t begin in a vineyard, it started with a song. Winemaker Dave Phinney heard the lyric “You at a standstill, mannequin” while driving, and it sparked an idea. Mannequins are meant to showcase changing fashion trends, yet they themselves never change. Wine, on the other hand, is constantly evolving with each vintage, season, and vineyard. The contrast became the inspiration for one of Orin Swift’s most iconic labels. (The Drinks Business⁠)

The haunting image on the label wasn’t staged, it happened by accident. Photographer Greg Gorman spent hours arranging discarded mannequins, but the perfect shot didn’t happen until they were tossed into a pile at the end of the shoot. Frame #540 became the label you’ll recognize today. (The Drinks Business⁠)

Inside the bottle, Mannequin is just as artistic. Rather than showcasing a single vineyard, Orin Swift blends Chardonnay from some of California’s premier growing regions, creating what they call a “liquid work of art.” A wine that captures the many personalities of California Chardonnay in one bottle.
