Trial run for our local art machine this weekend!

Have I finished painting the machine? No. Did I order the correct lightbulb for the machine? Also no, but the creations inside are so amazing we are hoping you don’t notice it’s still a work in process.

Come celebrate Tanabata with us!

Tanabata is Japan’s annual Star Festival. Celebrated primarily on July 7th, it honors the romantic folktale of two star-crossed celestial lovers—Orihime (Vega) and Hikoboshi (Altair)—who are separated by the Milky Way and allowed to reunite only on this single night.

According to the traditional folktale, the lovers neglected their daily duties because they were so in love. As punishment, the gods separated them across the “Heavenly River” (the Milky Way), granting them permission to cross it and embrace just once a year.

The core of the modern festival revolves around writing hopes and dreams on tanzaku (colorful, narrow strips of paper). These papers, along with origami, are hung on bamboo branches, which are believed to carry the wishes directly to the heavens.
