What is Vivir Modern Mexican?
vivir (n.) - the experience of being alive; the course of human events and activities
First off. I’m a white boy that comes from a small town in Ohio. Mexican food hasn’t always been my passion. I was raised on what I call a “salt+pepper” diet - meaning no other flavors were ever introduced to me besides this boring duo. In due time I started to do a bit of traveling and with that, it opened up my palette to things I had never imagined. Things didn’t have to be pulled from a freezer or carried off a “Swanson’s” truck to have a wonderfully tasteful meal, this could be accomplished from your own kitchen. With this paradigm shift in taste, I wanted to explore it to its fullest.
When I first visited Mexico it completely changed the way I saw food. The poor were making food that we would pay top dollar for - and it drew crowds! Sure, it was labor intensive - but generally things in life worth pursuing - are! With this new-found mindset, I aimed to bring this mentality back home - to my hometown. This is where the idea of Vivir Modern Mexican came to be.
