Independence Fun fact •••> "No, you do it!"
Second Continental Congress: Richard Henry Lee proposed a resolution of independence in June 1776, which led to a committee of 5 being appointed. Lee was appointed to a different committee to write the Articles of Confederation and his wife fell ill, so he couldn't tackle both jobs. Thomas Jefferson was asked to write the formal declaration of independence instead, as he was known for being a great writer.
He didn't want to and told John Adams that he should do it.
John Adams said, "I will not."
TJ said, "You should do it."
JA, "Oh! no."
TJ, "Why will you not? You ought to do it."
JA, "I will not."
TJ, "Why?"
JA, "Reasons enough."
TJ, "What can be your reasons?"
They argued back and forth, with Adams finally saying, "Reason first, you are a Virginian, and a Virginian ought to appear at the top of this business...second, I am obnoxious, suspected, and unpopular...third, you can write ten times better than I can."
🤣🤣🤣
Jefferson finally agreed and said, "...I will do as well as I can."
Now, he's famous and the rest is history.
