On July 16, 1969 this 1st Infantry Division patch hitched a ride on the historic mission to land humans on the Moon. It was carried by Astronaut Michael Collins, who piloted the Command Module on that mission. The patch was originally stitched to the uniform coat of his father James L. Collins, who had served with the First Division A.E.F. in World War I. Before the war, he was an aide-de-camp to General John J. Pershing and while serving in France, he commanded a battalion of the 7th Field Artillery, First Division. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal and A Silver Star for his service in the A.E.F.

In September of 1919, it sailed back from Europe with the First Division, and paraded in New York City and Washington, DC, with the First Division later that month. In February 2010, Collins mailed it to the First Division Museum at Cantigny along with this hand-written note.
