October 6 is National Coaches Day!
For many of us, the last time we had a coach was as a young athlete. Yet, the lessons we learned are still incredibly valuable today. Four important life lessons we learned from our coaches.

Play As a Team
We’ve all heard there’s no I in team. The best coaches always emphasize the importance of teamwork and that lesson remains the same at work and with our friends and family. Working as a team allows for different skill sets, backgrounds, and perspectives. It may be tempting to take on all of the responsibilities (and glory) by yourself. Yet the easiest, most rewarding, and most effective way to win is as a team.

Don’t Place Blame
After a tough loss, everyone wants to blame others. Who dropped the ball or ran too slow? But remember your first coaches’ lesson—play as a team. That means that it takes an entire team to lose a game. Remember this childhood lesson as an adult. Adapt a growth mindset and consider how the entire group effort might have fallen short and how you can learn from the loss and improve next time.

Practice Makes Proficient
When picking up a new hobby or skill, you discover that it doesn’t come as naturally to you as you’d hoped. But think back to how many practice swings (and missed pitches) your coach worked with you on before you finally hit one out of the park. To be your best, you must work towards it. Success comes from continue practicing and making small tweaks to your efforts.

Remember to Have Fun
A good coach reminded us winning wasn’t everything, even when it may have felt like it was. When you go to work, enjoy your friends and family, and find hobbies that seem interesting, remember to find the fun in what you’re doing. Don't just focus on the outcome, but instead focus on how and why it brings you joy.

Who was the coach that thought you these important lessons? Do you take these lessons with you daily and remember their importance, both at work and at home?
