Every city has attractions. New York has icons. And then there’s the Intrepid Museum—a place that is far more than either.

Permanently moored along Manhattan’s west side, the USS Intrepid isn’t simply a retired aircraft carrier. She’s a living chapter of American history. Commissioned in 1943 during World War II, Intrepid survived five kamikaze attacks, a torpedo strike, served in Vietnam, recovered astronauts returning from the Mercury and Gemini space missions, and spent more than three decades protecting freedom before becoming one of America’s premier military museums.
