Did you know Fish & Chips was once a secret WWII password? 🐟🍟

While it’s known today as the ultimate British comfort food, the true story of Fish & Chips is a fascinating tale of survival, wartime strategy, and national morale!

📜 The Origins: The dish actually began in the 1860s when a Jewish immigrant named Joseph Malin opened the first recorded fish and chip shop in East London. He combined fried fish (introduced earlier by Spanish and Portuguese refugees) with fried potato fingers (from France and Belgium). It quickly became the ultimate fuel for the working class during the Industrial Revolution, growing to over 25,000 "chippies" by 1910.

🇬🇧 The "Good Companions": During WWI and WWII, while staple foods like meat, sugar, and butter were heavily rationed, British Prime Ministers David Lloyd George and Winston Churchill consciously chose never to ration fish and chips. Churchill famously called them "the good companions," knowing that taking away the working class’s favorite comfort food would crush public morale.

🌊 A Dangerous Feast: Getting a portion during the wars was no easy feat. With most of the fishing fleet requisitioned by the Royal Navy to hunt for mines, brave fishermen had to dodge German U-boats in the North Sea just to catch cod and haddock. Because cooking oil was scarce, shops opened only a few days a week, leading to massive lines. If the fish ran out, people would still happily wait just to buy salted chips wrapped in old newspaper.

🪂 The Ultimate Code: The dish was so deeply ingrained in British culture that during the D-Day landings, British paratroopers dropped behind enemy lines used it as a secret password. In the pitch black, one soldier would call out "Fish," and if the other was friendly, they’d reply "Chips."

Taste the legendary dish that fueled a nation and kept a country's spirits alive right here in Gas City! Stop by Payne's today to enjoy your own "good companions." 🍽️✨

Plot twist: Stephen had a Spotify account before Payne’s had a page.

If you’ve ever wondered what our resident Yorkshireman was up to before serving fish & chips, here’s your answer.

Digging through the Payne’s archives, we found one of Stephen’s albums and thought it deserved another listen.

Who knew the man behind the fryer was also behind the microphone? 🎸🎶

🚨 A Payne's Special? Yes, you read that right. 🚨

We don't run specials very often, but our butcher got a little generous with the knife and cut our steaks smaller than usual.

That means our 12 oz. New York Strip & Fuggets dinner is just $31 while supplies last!

Same great quality. Same delicious flavor. Just a slightly smaller steak and a deal you won't see often around here.

When they're gone, they're gone!
