People ask us all the time why we decided to open The Hive. There are a lot of reasons, but one of the biggest is someone who never got the chance to walk through our doors.
Her name was Heather.
Heather was one of our biggest cheerleaders from the very beginning. She found us when we were just a little mobile coffee shop and even before that at some of our first pop-ups at Thornless Thistle. She showed up whenever she could, supported us, encouraged us, and reminded us why this crazy dream was worth chasing.
Mikey had actually gone to school with Heather, though she was a few years younger, so they never really knew each other then. But together, we got to know her as a customer, and before long, as a friend.
Back when we set up every Friday on Columbia Avenue, we'd spot her car pulling in and one of us would yell, "Heather!" She'd hop out wearing her sunglasses with that familiar smile, and we'd usually have her favorite drink, a BeePerky, halfway made before she even reached the window.
Those were some of our favorite moments in the camper because we got to catch up for a few minutes before the day picked back up.
Heather never got the chance to visit The Hive, and that will always be something we wish had been different. But she was part of this dream long before these walls existed. Every person who believed in us during those early days helped build what The Hive has become, and Heather will always be one of those people.
We think about her often. And every time we make a BeePerky, it's hard not to think of the friend who loved it first.
Today marks another year since Heather left this earth. We still miss her, and we still think about her often. We'd like to think she's somewhere in the glitter that's permanently floating through the air from the thousands of BeePerkys we've made since we opened.
We love you, Heather. π€
