After almost a year Matthew has finally come home to be with his family. Although he still has a long, hard journey ahead of him we are very happy he’s here. Everyday he will continue with his therapy with local talented people who are the best at what they do.
We would like to thank every one of you, our friends and neighbors, for all of your kind words, thoughts, and prayers. We have made it this far because we knew all of the heartfelt wishes were truly genuine.

With that being said, Matthew needs time to adjust to being home again. You are all so very important to us but you need to understand that visitors will be too overstimulating for him right now. We know people want to see him but for now we will be turning away anyone who tries to visit. We are coming into the flu, cold, and Covid season. We do not want him distracted during therapy or awoken from a restful sleep either.
Please respect us as a family. This is another new stepping stone but we need to do what is best and keep Matt’s health as good as possible while he’s in this recovery process.
Thank you

UPDATE (August 24, 2024)

It’s been a little over a month since Matt has been at the most amazing rehab in the world. When we arrived he got all settled in and assessed by the drs and therapists. The next day he began a very aggressive rehab program designed to get him up and moving. They tackled everything from his breathing, eating, swallowing, walking, and speaking. Designing a therapy program just for him including John Deere’s, country music, and, of course, farming has helped tremendously. With rehab being 6-7 days a week, we have been in awe of what they have accomplished since his arrival. Somedays there are subtle accomplishments and some days there are great accomplishments that we’ve prayed for for so long. They are teaching him how to be independent while teaching us how to help him to continue his progress when he comes home.
He has found ways to communicate with us which is refreshing since we haven’t been able to communicate with him for 10 long months.
He’s determined to come home to be with his family hopefully before the potato harvest gets underway. I think being around family, friends, and familiar surroundings will give him the encouragement to achieve even more. He’s working hard. Everyday.

We tell him everyday how many people are thinking of him and praying for him. We speak of past experiences and of future dreams. We decorated his room with so many pictures that he can’t stop staring at. They have beautiful gardens here so we bring him outside every chance we get.

We’ll continue updating everyone. Things move fast around here. We have a lot of information given to us everyday by doctors and therapists. Everyone here knows how important their job is to people like us who are lucky enough to see so much progress in such a short time.

UPDATE (July 23, 2024) Matt has finally made it to Shirley Ryan Ability Lab in Chicago, Illinois!

Since the last time I updated he, again, had some setbacks. He had to have his whole shunt replaced because of another infection. While trying to clear that he got pneumonia a second time. With antibiotics, time, and determination, he struggled through all of that to once again be deemed medically stable for the air ambulance flight to Chicago to begin rehab.
He’s been here for three days of evaluations and assessments. Therapy starts between 8-9am and sometimes goes to 4pm with only a few breaks in between. Up till now he has proven to be the strongest person I have ever known.
Chub and I flew out to Chicago and were waiting for him and Macie. They settled him in and the next morning all his drs, therapists, case managers, introduced themselves and immediately started him on his rehab journey.
Trying to describe this place would be very hard. We’ve been here for only a few days and we are still in awe of how professional, organized, and competent everyone is. We are confident that Matt will excel here.
So I’ll continue to update as he reaches milestones. Be safe

Update (June 15, 2024)

Last week we got news that Matt would not be leaving for rehab. The doctors found his shunt was clogged and would need surgery. On Friday doctors replaced a valve and sent it to the lab where they discovered an infection. He went back to surgery on Thursday to remove the entire shunt and start on strong antibiotics. He is doing good. Hopefully in a couple of weeks he will be able to have a new shunt put in place. He’s very strong.
Please keep him in your prayers

Update (June 4, 2024)

We were all ready to leave to finally start Matt’s next chapter in his recovery at rehab in Chicago. Bags were packed, air ambulance was scheduled, flights and motels were booked, meetings all finalized, his room all cleaned out, boys nestled at Memere’s house. At 6pm on Monday we are told about a ct scan for precautionary measures. 8pm the neurosurgeon informs us that there is a change from the last CT scan he had in March. He listed different things that could happen and finally said the words we absolutely did not want to hear, “Matt will not be leaving tomorrow as planned”. After saying goodbye all day to amazing people we’ve had the pleasure of meeting during this horrible experience. I immediately thought he was joking. But he wasn’t. We are still here at EMMC, waiting to hear if he will have to go back for another surgery. Drs say best case scenario is 2-3 weeks.
Needless to say we are all devastated by this change of events. We wanted to let you know so you could continue following with us.

We have finally gotten word that Matthew will be leaving for rehab on Tuesday, June 4 at 10:00!! He will be going to the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab in Chicago, Illinois. They are the #1 acute rehabilitation center in the country. They will create a program specifically for Matt to help him regain his strength to be able to come home. Physicians, scientists, nurses, therapists, technologists will give him access to the latest research to help increase the speed of his recovery and improve his outcome. We don’t know how long he will be there, we assure you we will be with him every step of the way to encourage him. He has a very long road ahead of him but we know he has the determination to do anything he sets his mind to. So keep him in your thoughts and prayers as he starts the most important journey of his life.
We will keep you updated!

I know we haven’t updated for a little while but Matthew has come a long way from where he was 5 months ago. He is still in the hospital in Bangor but he has been cleared medically to move on to a rehab facility. After so much research and many, many, many phone conversations he has finally been accepted to a specific rehab facility that will properly prepare him to come home to his family. I dont want to say the name of the rehab just yet because I dont want to jinx it. We are just that close.

We have not left him alone and we feel that that has helped to get him where he is today. We have been advocating so hard for him to get the absolute best physical therapy for him. Unfortunately he does not have much access to physical therapy right now but when we’re done with paperwork and case manager delays, he WILL move right along. It hasn’t been easy because the hospitals case managers have been working against us at every turn. It’s okay though, because in the end we will do what is best for him and make sure he gets the best care possible.

His precious boys have finally been to see him. It was a reunion that no one involved will ever, ever forget. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room.
So we ask that you please keep him in your thoughts and prayers so he can finally get to this rehab. Thank you for the words of hope and encouragement. They have lifted our spirits and helped us greatly through this difficult journey.

We will update soon.

We have now passed our two month mark since Matthew’s terrible accident. He, unfortunately, is still in ICU. We don’t know how much longer he’ll be there but it is the care he still needs. The good news is that he was finally able to recover from that awful infection he got 6 weeks ago. Because of that the doctors felt it was a good time to put in a shunt that will help to drain any excess fluid that accumulates around his brain. Surgery went very well and so far no new infections. Physical, occupational, and speech therapy have seen him and have decided on a plan to get him ready to someday be moved to a rehab facility. Severe traumatic brain injury(TBI) is something we had never heard of before this. It’s a very difficult and long process for the brain to heal itself, but it does. We are confident that with time he will wake up and let us hear his voice again. Matthew has always been strong, ambitious, stubborn, and determined which are all important characteristics to have to help him fight this and come home to his family and to his farm. So please keep the good vibes, thoughts, and prayers coming. We’ll update again soon.
