I have 2 pullets out of the bunch. TWO!! 🫣 I will have to wait on the other two since the membranes apparently were not completely dry🫠🫠

No one can complain to me about how many cockerels they get.

Ever.

Anyone who messages me about ending up with too many cockerels…I’m just going to send them this result page🤷🏼‍♀️

I just hope that those last two that haven’t been identified end up being pullets, but they likely won’t be. Pretty much every hatch of BCM are cockerel heavy. My last hatch I ended up with ONE pullet in the bunch. ONE. ☝🏼

I don’t think I have EVER hatched more than two BCM pullets in a group and my first group of BCM chicks from TS? ✌🏽out of 7.

Now I am going to check the egg colors of these little beasts and make sure that the ones that are my pullets came from my darkest brown eggs. I will probably keep a cockerel of it came from a very dark brown egg.

Anyone who would like to have a little BCM raptor boy from a dark brown egg…5️⃣ each. Discount for the bunch(minus the one that I will keep). If I can find pics on the egg colors, I will leave them in the comments. Egg shells went to dna lab🤷🏼‍♀️

A cockerels first few times can look very alarming and sometimes horrifying. Remember that cockerels have to balance on a moving base, so they aren’t going to do it well until they figure out their balance. It is like trying to stand on a Bosu Ball or Wobble Board. Holding onto to something helps us keep our balance. The head of a hen does the same thing for a cockerel. So it is going to be horrifying to watch in the beginning.

My first exposure was Vander targeting this same hen two years ago. Tulip was his favorite and he would chase her down literally minutes in between a previous mating with her. I had NO idea that this was the norm for many cockerels and roosters.

Submissive hens are used to it and they are usually able to make it work in a sustainable way. Sometimes it can become too much and feathers get lost on the head, back, and wings. I have saddles for some of my girls during and after breeding season and have actually needed to bandage some from gashes created by over-mating when there were too many roosters focusing on a hen. There is also a cream you can use to prevent pecking called Pick No More by Rooster Booster.
If necessary, I will intervene. In this video, I actually removed Tulip from this pen because there were many other options for him to choose and he only wanted to focus on Tulip and I had just had her separated to grow out her feathers from breeding season and I didn’t want her to be focused on again. Learn your flocks and know when to step in. Remember that roosters need to cover your hens multiple times to guarantee a high fertility rate.
