The Story Behind the Name 📜

Every day, guests walk through our doors and see the name General Morgan Inn, but have you ever wondered where it came from?

General John Hunt Morgan was a Confederate cavalry commander during the Civil War whose swift campaigns earned him the nickname "The Thunderbolt of the Confederacy." In September 1863, he briefly made Greeneville his headquarters, creating a lasting connection to our town.

That connection was later honored inside the historic Hotel Brumley, where the elegant dining room became known as the General Morgan Room. When the restored hotel reopened as the General Morgan Inn in 1996, the name carried that tradition forward.

Today, our name is more than a landmark. It is a reminder of Greeneville's rich and complex history, inviting every guest to discover the stories that have shaped our community. 🏛️

The Story of the General Morgan Inn Began with a Brick. 🧱

Long before it became the General Morgan Inn, our building was known as the Grand Central Hotel.

This newspaper clipping from 1934 preserves a fascinating piece of Greeneville history. While advertising Forest Park Pool, it notes that the clay used to make the bricks for the Grand Central Hotel came from the very ground where the pool was later built.

More than 140 years after the hotel first opened, many of those original bricks are still here. They have witnessed generations of travelers, celebrations, and everyday moments, remaining a quiet reminder of Greeneville's past.

The next time you visit, take a moment to look around. Some of the very bricks that welcomed guests in the 1880s are still welcoming them today. ❤️🏨🧱
