I hope you don’t mind me sharing something community centered and not about hash and eggs hahaha…

Most people know Jason as the veteran guy behind the grill at Freedom Cafe.

There’s been a lot of interest in knowing about what he does on Tuesday night nights that is so very involved with fathers.

And if you’ve followed our journey for any length of time, you know our family isn’t perfect. We’re a BIG blended family with 8 kids. We are madly in love with our family because we adore the people in it, but we’ve also had many heartbreaking moments, plenty of mistakes, and an unbelievable amount of personal growth.

That’s why I love that Jason leads this Father group.

He doesn’t lead it because he’s a flawless father.

Because he knows he isn’t (although sometimes I beg to differ haha)

He’ll be the first to tell you there are conversations and moments he wishes he could press a do over button. Or movements that he could take and reverse or erase completely.

But one thing I’ve watched over the years is that he NEVER stops trying to become a better dad. HE ALWAYS putting his best foot forward. 

Every Tuesday, a group of fathers gathers to encourage each other, learn from one another, and remind each other that no one has to figure fatherhood out alone.

I think that’s something our community needs.

Tonight begins a new session, now meeting at the Community Action Family Center on Federal Street. These fathers and father figures have childcare and food available.

If this is something you feel like would benefit you or somebody you know… then you’re the exact reason why we took the time to share this!!

The best fathers aren’t the ones who get everything right.

They’re the ones who keep showing up, keep learning, and keep loving their kids through EVERY season.

7:/12/26: We’re not reopening tomorrow.

Trust us… we wanted to.

But tomorrow, downtown will literally be SHAKING.

Wilson’s building demolition taking place!!! businesses have been warned to expect heavy vibrations and enough movement that glassware, pictures, and other fragile items should be moved to the floor to prevent them from falling / breaking.

After weighing everything, we simply can’t justify opening under those conditions. What if it’s dusty? What if a cup breaks and hurts someone? The safety of our staff, our customers, and our café comes first….

So we’re delaying our reopening by one more day.

PLEASE see us Tuesday morning!!! We are so ready to serve breakfast without the building rattling around us!!!

Thank you for understanding. One more day, and we’ll be back.

Monday morning, we’re back behind the grill, the Dean's Beans Organic Coffee will be brewing, and breakfast and lunch will be waiting!!!!

Update about the next father group.

We’re grateful to share that beginning next week, the meetings will be held at the Family Center at 90 Federal Street!

Dinner will be provided.
Childcare will be available.
Transportation Support available.
The group remains completely free.

This group is for fathers who want to grow, connect, and become even stronger for their families.

We’re incredibly thankful to the Family Center for opening their doors and making it even easier for dads to participate.

If you’d like more information about joining, please contact Community Action at 413-475-1555. If you’re at the Cafe, you’re welcome to talk with Jason, the chef, if he’s available!

This is sweet.

For months, our youngest daughter came with us to the café every Saturday while we worked.

One Saturday, she met another little girl who came to breakfast with her dad. They hit it off almost instantly.

What started a fun chat over breakfast has turned into sleepovers, playdates, and two little girls asking to see each other as often as they can.

Today, they watched the fireworks together. Freedom cafe you really have become part of our lives!

We will be closed this week and we will miss you! Closed Jul 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11, 2026! That’s one week! See you next week!

Wow, did we work hard today! But it was the gratifying kind of work.

It was so nice seeing all your faces. The reason we were ABLE to work so hard is because you continue to trust us to serve you.

Every busy day gives us a little more hope that we’re doing something right.

Jason didn’t take a single break.
I never even stopped to eat.
Our entire team just kept going.

It was hot, but I’ll gladly take a hot day running around, especially if it means YOU get to experience exactly what you came for.

After all…

🇺🇸 It isn’t 120°.
🇺🇸 I’m not 5,700 miles from home.
🇺🇸 I’m not wearing a full military uniform.
🇺🇸 I’m not carrying 70 pounds of gear.
🇺🇸 There’s very little chance I’ll drive over an IED today.

I also have air conditioning in the very building I’m hustling in… and then we go home to a roof over my head.

It’s all about perspective. So grateful.

To every veteran and active-duty service member: thank you for carrying burdens most of us will never truly understand, so the rest of us can enjoy days like today.

After that, we’ll be taking one week off. Some of our team will be deep-sea fishing. Some will be vacationing out of state. Some will hope to be chasing ocean waves.

Jason and I will be spending as much time with the kids as possible … and just being home.

And honestly, that sounds pretty perfect. But we will miss you!
