Shrimp Po Boy

Yesterday was July 4th. We sold (and ate) a lot of barbeque. We are hoping you ate some, too. That being the case, maybe we should change it up a little for the Monday special tomorrow. The weather outside is hot and humid - kinda reminds me of New Orleans. You know what else reminds me of New Orleans - po-boy sandwiches. With that said, tomorrow’s special will be a fried shrimp po-boy, starting at 5pm.

As background, a po-boy is a New Orleans sub sandwich loaded with toppings and typically served with chips, or in this case, fries. We bring in a French style po-boy roll, and we will top it with fried shrimp and all the trimmings. In true New Orleans style, it will come “dressed” with lettuce, tomato, remoulade, and pickles; and accompanied by our classic shoestring fries, or a side of your choice. We will offer the special as a dinner plate for $16. We hope to see you on Monday, July 6, for our Monday special or one of our barbeque favorites. We will be open from 11am - 9pm as usual. Creamy Cajun Pasta

It’s been a while since we made Creamy Cajun Pasta. We talked about it at home a couple of weeks ago; then, someone asked about it last Monday. Since then, we haven’t been able to get it out of our minds. So, if you like our Creamy Cajun Pasta with Bell Peppers and Sausage: tomorrow is your day.

That’s right, one of our employees showed us this recipe and said it was one of her family’s favorites. One look, and it reminded us of some of the fantastic meals we used to eat in New Orleans; we decided it must be put on the Monday special list. This pasta dish has the obligatory cream sauce seasoned with cajun spices, sauteed onions and peppers, and highlighted with smoked sausage. (For those that are worried about spice level, we are using smoked sausage instead of Anduille sausage to keep the heat down while retaining all the richness of the other flavors.) We will be serving it over bowtie pasta; because bowtie pasta is nearly the perfect vehicle for transporting a gorgeous sauce from bowl to tastebud.

We will be serving this special as a bowl of pasta and sauce, accompanied by a side caesar salad and a garlic knot bread roll for a price of $16. Today - we have a 3 part PBA (Public Barbeque Announcement)

Part 1: Tomorrow is the last Friday of the month. That means that Tim Cadiere and the Tailgate will be playing live. It also means that we will have beef ribs available starting at 5pm. So, come on down, listen to some great entertainment, and enjoy the best barbeque and drinks in the area. Music usually starts around 6:30; and we will watch the weather and make a decision tomorrow about whether Tim performs inside or out on the patio.

Part 2: July 4th is just next weekend. It is time to get the BBQ game planned. To assist, 5B's will be open regular hours on the 2nd and 3rd; and we will be open from 11am - 2pm on Saturday, July 4th. If you want to make sure you have all your bases covered, give us a call and pre-order for the 4th; and we will ensure that your food is hot, fresh, and ready for you and your guests over the holiday weekend.

Bringing Home the Brunswick (Stew)

More than 15 years ago, when living overseas, Jenny decided it was time for us to have Brunswick stew for dinner…so she made some. Well, it was delicious; but she continued tweaking the recipe as we lived, ate, and enjoyed….and the stew kept being a regular staple of our home-cooked meals. Years later, after moving to Georgia and loving where we lived; we decided to open 5B’s Barbeque and Brews. We just had to incorporate the stew into the menu - after all, we are a restaurant that serves barbeque. So, she improved on it some more by using a combination of all of our meats from the smoker; pulled pork, chicken breast, and tender flavorful brisket. That brings us to the stew we serve today: 5B’s Brunswick stew. Rich, flavorful, and pure southern comfort on your plate / bowl / or spoon.

You can share our stew at the restaurant, you can even buy it by the quart as take-out. Starting today, we are sharing it in a new way - sealed, frozen, and ready to reheat at home. We are proud to offer that same recipe in a convenient 1 quart heat-and-serve package so families can enjoy it at home or take it with them wherever they go. You just never know when you need to bring home the Brunswick for yourself and your friends and family.

Smoked Pork Tenderloin with Cherry - Port Wine Reduction

Today is Father’s Day, and lots of folks are getting all their grilled and barbeque favorites. We encourage that, and we also recognize that we should probably change it up for tomorrow’s special. One sunny summer day last year, we did a special that was different from our typical repertoire; and it was very popular. Let’s try it again… Smoked Pork Tenderloin with a Cherry-Port Wine reduction sauce. Yummy yummy yum.

Simple, delicious, and slightly elegant for a barbeque restaurant; our pork tenderloin is smoked, sliced, and laid gently over a bed of mashed potatoes. Here’s where the elegant comes in ….while one may expect a gravy; we know that cherries enhance the natural sweetness of pork, so Jenny is cooking up a beautiful cherry and port wine reduction sauce that pairs so well with the tenderloin that it just had to be served as a special. We think you will like it,too.

Baby Back Ribs - Weekend Cookout Favorites

Summer is here and this is barbeque weather. Unfortunately, the heat and humidity hit so quickly that most of us aren’t ready to stand by a hot grill long enough to satisfy that craving for real smoked meat. Let us do that for you tomorrow, we will be making that Lake Area barbeque favorite: baby back pork ribs. Join us tomorrow evening for the Monday special - baby back pork ribs.

We tried searching for those “cute little” baby back ribs that you can eat a whole rack without much effort; but we decided that really isn’t how we do things at 5Bs. Instead, we sourced some excellent quality, healthy sized ribs that will fill you up and never let you down. To keep them a little different and special, we are smoking these and basting them with a sweet sauce that will make the ribs sticky, moist, juicy and flavorful. Because this special is clearly BBQ, we will serve it the same way we serve our other barbeque - as a plate (with a half-rack of ribs and 2 sides) for $20, or as a platter (with a full rack of ribs and 2 sides) for $30. We will not be offering just ribs - too complicated to program into our purchasing system. We hope to see you on Monday, June 15, for our Monday special or one of our other barbeque favorites. Chicken Fried Steak

Now it’s time for something we don’t cook often at home; but love to eat when we go out - chicken fried steak. Now for the educational portion of the update: we have done this special once or twice and called it Country Fried Steak. One of our customers was kind enough to tell us that with the white gravy, it is actually “chicken fried” instead of “country fried”. Turns out, Google agrees; there are some breading and cooking variations between Chicken Fried Steak and Country Fried Steak; but the biggest visual difference is white gravy (on chicken fried steak) and brown gravy (on country fried steak). I like nearly all gravy, but our dish at 5B’s has the thicker breading and the white gravy of chicken fried. How about that for a little extra credit for our weekly post?

As a restaurant that serves barbeque, we should also spend a little time and effort on good southern cooking from time to time. This special is just that; a half pound portion of chicken fried steak, and it will be served with our mashed potatoes, green beans, and white gravy. To really make it a bonafide Southern special, we will also be serving this one with a biscuit. Yep - my mouth is watering just writing about it.

5B French Dip Sandwich

The special for tomorrow is a French Dip sandwich. The weather just isn’t feeling like a heavy Monday special - it feels like it needs a good sandwich to lighten the day and give us some extra pep. To be honest, one of our employees has kinda been wanting this special for a little while now; and it seems like a good time to make it happen.

We occasionally do a cheesesteak sandwich; and we know how much we like a good strip loin. We want to do the same with our French dip sandwich. We acquired a few New York Strip loins that look amazing, and we plan to introduce those to our slicer to give us just the right protein for a delicious sandwich - especially after we simmer it in a rich beef broth and grill it on our flat-top and add some grilled onions, grilled portabellas, and a slice of provolone cheese on top of a baguette roll. We hope this simple pleasure sounds as delicious to you as it does to us.

The 5B French dip sandwich will be served with a choice of one of our regular sides, and will be priced at $17.
