Shives'2 Restaurant

Shives'2 Restaurant Simple food, for a complicated world. Thoughtfully prepared, and shared with love.

The former Shives’ restaurant building was sold today.
The realtor that handled the transaction said she thinks the new owner will develop it into apartments.
I apologize that I was not able to reopen it as a family restaurant.
All your support has been very greatly appreciated .

I have hired a company to demolish and haul away this garage & attached shop. If anyone would like to salvage the roof (in great shape) lumber, door, windows, etc, I would be happy to keep these things from going to the dump. There’s also a very large beam that I’m sure is quite valuable to the right person.
The demo will start this Thursday (April 27th) so if you want any of these (FREE) materials, please get in touch with me here ASAP. You’ll need to take what you want before Thursday.
PLEASE do not remove anything from inside the garage with talking to me first.

I have an announcement and I know not everyone will like it. So I’ll say in advance, that I apologize for those who are disappointed, but I am doing the best I can. Hoping you will wish me luck and not leave any negative commmets here.

So……..

I’ve made an agreement with the owners of the Fairfax Coffee House in Berkeley Springs) they will allow me to cook in their (approved) commercial kitchen and will sell my food from their location (23 Fairfax Street, Berkeley Springs) for a percentage of revenue. It’s less than 6 miles from the Shives location! 🎉

We are still finalizing all the small details, but the general idea is that I’ll be offering free samples at the Star Theater (Tuesday night and Sunday matinee) during the first 3 weeks of March.

We’ll take a week off for final preparations and then start offering dinners to go around April 7th. The menu will be very limited, there will be 2-3 offerings each day. Here’s a sample of what we’re thinking ….

WEEK ONE:
1. Cajun Style Red Beans & Rice (with andouille sausage) along with a green salad

2. Spinach Lasagna with Garlic Bread along with a green salad

WEEK TWO:
1. Spicy Shrimp Creole (over rice) and served with steamed broccoli

2. Classic Meatloaf & Gravy over Rosemary Mashed Potatoes and served with steamed broccoli

3. Vegetarian Dinner- Sautéed Spinach, Cabbage, & Mixed Field Greens, Tri Colored Herbed Potato Medley, and Garlic Roasted Cauliflower w/ Humus.

WEEK THREE:
1. Kielbasa, Cabbage, and Potato Skillet served with Cornbread (made from scratch)

2. Chicken & Black Bean Chili served with Cornbread (made from scratch)

3. Vegetarian Stir Fry over Jasmin Rice served with Classic Waldorf (Apple) Salad

We are hoping this can be profitable enough to generate the funds needed to begin:

a) selling from the ShIves’2 location in Hancock
(which is currently not allowed by the Fire Marshal)

b) the renovations needed to rebuild and then reopen our location in Hancock.

MUCH will depend on the success of this endeavor, so fingers crossed these items are popular with Berkeley Springs, and Hancock neighbors and friends ❤️😋

These items will be “to go” only, pre-packaged and available for pick up from a ‘grab and go’ refrigerated case. They will sell for about $17 per person and each package will serve 2. All you do when you get them back to your home or office is reheat.

Which menu item would you like to see offered first?

UPDATE…….

In our last few posts, we announced working thru the list of Washington County & Health Department requirements, and asking for financial support to get it done.

Although the business was advertised as a turn key operation, in fact, there are significant renovations needed as we are required to meet current building & health codes - as if we were breaking ground on a brand new facility.

This includes (the newest discovery) fire separation materials between the 1st & 2nd floors in the front section of the property. Of course, these renovations are in addition to the required new commercial kitchen hood, walk in fridge, and ADA compliant restroom.

As such, we are not sure when/if we will ever be able to reopen the restaurant. This is as big a disappointment to us, as it is to many who were so looking forward to the continuation of the tradition.

All the encouragement, support, and best wishes of the community have been so appreciated! We’d particularly like to thank Donnie Betts, Oscar Robles, Mike Faith, and Tim Smith.

IF it turns out that we cannot reopen Shives’ - all those who donated to our GoFundMe (which raised about $1400) will be offered refunds. If there is anyone who would like a refund now, please reach out to me (Pamela Washington) in a private message and I’ll take care of it.

We thank the Hancock community for all its amazing support, and wish everyone a very merry and safe holiday season!

The page will continue to be updated from time to time, as we continue to slough through this process.

Have a great day!

Here’s a look at the daily dinner offerings. We will select 2-3 each week and rotate what’s available.

Which one are you most excited to try?

Please remember, this is in addition to the pizza, subs, and wedgies. 👍🏽

Here’s a quick video to show you some of the exterior progress we’ve been making, and to say a big THANK YOU, to all who’ve contributed to help us so far.
This journey is an obvious marathon, but the help we’re getting along the way is turning into a rely race, and we appreciate all who are carrying the baton even a short distance.
Please continue to support us and share this with your friends, family, and colleagues. Go Hancock!

Hi again! Thought perhaps our supporters and neighbors might like to see the menus we’ve been developing.

PLEASE keep in mind that we will continue to offer the traditional pizzas, subs, and wedgies you’ve all known & loved for decades.

In time, we may introduce our own house made pizza crust - including gluten free, and cauliflower crust, and well as our own house made pizza sauce. But it will not replace the originals as offered for years by Emmlyn & Stephanie. 👍🏽

And, if you work in our around Hancock, we’ll be offering group/corporate and personal catering for groups up to 100.

Feel free to share this post far and wide. We appreciate your interest and support, and are working hard to get reopened ASAP

Hello again neighbors and friends. We are coming to you today with a bit of news and also a request for suggestions:

1. Our “hoped for” opening goal is now sometime before Thanksgiving (fingers crossed). It could be as late as late December if things don’t go just right, be we are shooting for late November.

2. Because of the delays, we haven’t followed up with any of the many wonderful job applications we got from people interested in joining our team. BUT, we will be reaching out this weekend and early next week (now that we have some idea on a targeted opening date). That way we can see who is still interested & available.

So if, you’ve already sumbitted your application, you don’t need to do anything more. If you haven’t yet submitted an application and will be available to start work between late November and late December, please complete an application here: https://forms.gle/kTHtfhRm5AUfoewQ6
Our apologies for the delay.

3. Once we open, we anticipate having some food that we would like to donate. Like most restaurants, we may have too much of some items that we know we won’t be able to use before it’s expiration date, or there may be menu items left over at the end of the day, that are still edible, but won’t hold well overnight to be sold the next day.

Can anyone please list or tag worthy organizations in/ around Hancock that would be able to pick up food donations from us? We’d prefer a secular, community based program, but will entertain all suggestions.

Thanks in advance for your help & suggestions. And please share this post if you can.

Welcome to the online employment application for Shives'2 Resturant! We are located at 119 East Main Street, in Hancock Maryland. We're building a great team and would love to hear about your interest in joining us. P.S. You need to be at least 18 years old to be hired.

This week’s news is a bit of a mixed bag.

Thank you so much long time Hancock resident, (and contractor extraordinaire) Donald Betts! The outside of ShIves’2 now looks amazing! And we aren’t done yet.

The other big news though is that we will not be opening on October 31st as we had hoped. We are at this time unsure of our open date, and rather than continue posting dates that aren’t met, we’re going to wait til we have more certainty. Deep apologies for the disappointment and the delay. It’s beyond our control 😞

To those of you who answered our “help wanted” ad last week, we will be contacting you shortly to follow up and schedule interviews with some of you. We will keep you posted on potential start work dates.

Have a great weekend, everyone. We appreciate your interest and support.
