What an awesome day at the Hiawatha! Thanks to the Dicksons of Boise and Alberta Canada for supporting The Cycle Haus and frankly just being some of the kindest people I’ve met. Add in seeing these 2 amazing creatures and getting to hang out with our awesome shuttle driver Tom Little and honestly I thought - Man I’m lucky. Thanks guys for a great day.

It was awesome to see everyone at the City Council Meeting last night. We were able to present 160 signatures, including from 8 Harrison business owners, many residents, and one city council member (Thank you John!). It was awesome to see our community come together in a unified voice to say no to this tax. Unfortunately they did not vote it down - they just tabled it for another day. It also became very clear who supports it, who’s still thinking about it, and who opposes it.

Here’s where things stand:

Wanda Irish: Supports the tax. Gaveled down 2 business owners and myself who vocalized opposition.

Jo Prophet: Supports the tax, but wouldn’t say how much.

Kelly Killian: Still thinking about it. Thought it wasn’t the right time.

John Gray: Opposes the tax. Signed the petition.

Charlie Shutt: Absent

TJ Byrne: Supports a 1% increase in the sales tax for a city tax of 2% and a total tax of 8%

Will Butler: Supports a 4% increase in the sales tax for a city tax of 5% and a total tax of 11%.

We’ll have more video tomorrow but here’s some of what Will Butler had to say.

The work isn’t over! They’ve sent this to a workshop and then to another vote in July. Let’s take time to tell the council no means no! Our new goal is to hit 500 signatures by the time of the workshop.

Thank you to everyone for the amazing support of our campaign to protect the small businesses of Harrison and stop the increase of the City Sales Tax. We’ve had alot of people DM us and stop by The Cycle Haus to say they oppose the increase. Our petition is on its 2nd page of signatures. Our goal is to hit at least 100 signatures that I can deliver to Mayor Irish at the June 9th City Council Meeting.

We have also been asked by a few people for an online petition. We have created one on change.org here:

Whether you are a City resident or just someone who likes to shop and eat in the City of Harrison, your voice matters!

IMPORTANT! According to the City Council
Agenda, they will be voting on this on June 9th at 6pm at The Harrison Senior Center. If you missed the town hall this will be the time to show up and make your voice heard. Let’s pack the room and tell our council that adding to our already high tax rate is unacceptable.

Harrison already has the 7th highest sales tax rate in the State of ID, only behind Sun Valley, Hailey, McCall, Ketchum, Stanley and Sandpoint. An increase would make us one of the highest taxed cities in Idaho, and depending on the increase, the Country.

Don’t let anyone fool you - The local option tax is not optional. It’s a sales tax. It’s also not just for tourists. Everyone will pay this tax, even the residents of the City of Harrison. As Sweet Brown once said - Ain’t nobody got time for that.

Stop the increase of the sales tax in the City of Harrison

06/03/2026

We don't generally like to post about politics on our page, but this one is important. Frankly, it might the difference of some of the businesses in Harrison making it or not. The City of Harrison is thinking about raising the City Sales Tax from 1% to up to 5%. That means between state and city taxes you could be paying 11% tax on food, lodging, clothing, and other goods in Harrison. For context, the City of Seattle's sales tax is 10.25%, the City of Los Angeles’ Sales Tax is 9.75%, and New York City’s Sales Tax is 8.875%.

Approximately 25 people showed up to a city forum regarding this tonight, including the owners of 5 of the major businesses in Harrison. When asked if anyone in the room supported the tax, only 1 person said yes. When we asked the City Council to say whether they support the tax, they refused to answer. Check out the video of Mayor Irish below. I think it says it all. They have already made a decision on this. The town hall was performative. If you care about local businesses the time to stand up is now. Tell the City Council to keep Idaho Idaho. Low taxes, hard work, and a community that cares - Don’t California our Idaho! (No offense Californians, we love you too)

The Cycle Haus will have a petition available for you to sign at our restaurant counter in the next few days. Please come by and speak up!
