This is one of the most peaceful places in Helena, hanging on the benches in the Great Northern Town Center. It’s so lovely! Better yet, every Thursday Out to Lunch is hosted right here by the carousel. If you haven’t been yet, this is a great week to check it out! The food truck is Taste of Europe, the music is brought to you by Rod Morrison and the weather forecast looks perfect! See you there!

Before Helena was Helena, the Salish, Blackfeet, Bannock, Crow and other tribal peoples shared this valley as a community hunting ground. Their deep connection to the horse is woven into the very soul of Montana's story. It felt only right that our carousel honor that legacy.

Meet Stormy and his buddy. Stormy, the light colored wild mustang, carries a Native American Crow shield and arrow quiver, as well as beads, bear claws and other Native decorations. His friend, a wild mustang from the Pryor Mountain range, also carries a shield, fur pelt and other tools for hunting. Every detail was crafted with care and deep respect for that history. Colors used mimic the Native dyes that were crafted at that time of herbs, grasses and berries.

When you ride these horses, you're not just spinning on a carousel; you're touching something older and far more beautiful than any of us.

We are grateful to call this valley home, and grateful to the nations who shaped it.

Growing up in Montana, I have a soft spot for cowboys and old westerns. I remember watching them with my mom. Because of this, I was so excited to learn that we have Trigger on our Carousel!

Who? Some of you might ask. Trigger is the legendary horse of Roy Rogers, the one and only. Our Trigger features a rope and 6 shooter, like all good cowboy horses. His red plaid saddle blanket comes from a favorite shirt of Mr. Rogers, as well as the tooled leather found on the saddle. Roy is often remembered for his song, Happy Trails.

Our fabulous menagerie of carousel animals had quite the journey to get to Helena. After being carved in California, the animals made their way to Bette Largent of Carrousel Consultants in Spokane, WA, to be painted.

Check out these before and after pics! Thank you Bette for making our animals so beautiful!
