๐ A Slice of Houlton History
If you've lived in Houlton for any length of time, you've probably heard it called the "Shire Town."
That nickname has been part of the community's identity for generations and lives on every time the Houlton Shiretowners take the field, court, or ice. The Meduxnekeag River winds through town much as it has for centuries, while just a few miles to the east, the Canadian border reminds us of Houlton's unique place as a crossroads between Maine and New Brunswick.
Houlton has also been home to schools, businesses, and institutions that helped shape northern Maineโincluding Ricker College, which educated students here for nearly a century before closing in 1978.
Today, it's easy to take these pieces of our town's story for granted. But together, they help tell the story of a community that has proudly called this corner of Maine home for generations.
