In early postpartum, sometimes you just need an easy one-handed snack or meal to nourish yourself while you’re also nursing a baby. Sometimes you need something quick and on the go, while still sticking to the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda… stating that we need warmth and moisture to rebuild blood, digestion, and restore energy. Below are just a few one-handed snack and meal ideas to inspire you to fill your freezer.

-Burritos and wraps
-Mini meat pies/empanadas

We pour everything into the birth and the baby and forget the person doing the recovering.

Postpartum is when your body needs the most support and usually gets the least.

Real food ready to heat is the simplest way to prep for your own healing.

Warm, cooked meals are looking pretty good right about now. 😅🍲

While everyone else is side-eyeing their salad, we'll be over here with nourishing soups, stews, congee, and slow-cooked meals.

If you're postpartum, this is your reminder that warm, easy-to-digest foods have been recommended in many traditional postpartum cultures for generations.

Prima Bars PRIMA
One of my absolute favorites. I have these on subscribe and save. They are all delicious, but my favorite flavors are Cookie Dough and Salted Caramel. Bars have about 16g protein, 11g fat, and 17g carbs. They are sweetened with organic raw honey (which I much prefer over stevia, monk fruit, etc.), and they have grass-fed tallow, collagen, and real food ingredients.

Equip’s Prime Bars Equip Foods
One of my other favorites. They have 20g protein per bar and are sweetened with dates and honey. Grass-fed beef protein, collagen, and colostrum… they have chocolate, peanut butter, and mixed berry. Save 10% with code RESTORATIVE.

Jacob Bar Jacob Bar
I just recently discovered Jacob bars and they are SO good! My favorite flavors are vanilla and berry which I did not expect. I am usually a chocolate girl. These remind me of a similar texture to Prima…more creamy. They have 20 grams of protein which is great, and are sweetened with honey and dates. These ones are top notch quality. Save 10% with code ROOTS.

Just Ingredients Bars Karalynne Call Karalynne Call.shop
The peanut butter chocolate flavor is so yummy…the chocolate chips are soft and creamy. They are lower on the protein side with about 10 grams and are also sweetened with honey.

Rise Bars Rise
These bars have 15-18 grams of protein per bar, and all of the flavors were pretty good. Minimal ingredients, and mostly organic.

Forward Bars The Forward Bar
These are a plant based protein bar with 12 grams of protein. They are sweetened with dates and honey and have the texture of a dried fruit and nuts/seeds bar. Save 15% with code ROOTS.

Perfect Bars Perfect Bar
These bars have a little less protein at about 12 grams, but I do love that they have full-size bars around the 230-calorie mark as well as mini bars around the 130-calorie mark for kids. They are extremely dense and full of healthy fats and complex carbs. You can find these anywhere like Sprouts, Whole Foods, or even online grocery retailers like Amazon. They are refrigerated but are shelf-stable for up to two weeks.

Skout Bars Skout Organic Snacks
These are great little mini bars for kids. They do not have a significant a

The perfect summer postpartum breakfast. ☀️🤍

We know... a warm rice pudding in the middle of summer sounds a little backwards.

But in Ayurveda, warm, easy-to-digest foods are often recommended year-round to support healthy digestion, nutrient absorption, and postpartum healing, even during the hottest months.

This Shatavari Rice Pudding is one of our favorite postpartum recipes because it's simple, comforting, and deeply nourishing. Made with creamy coconut milk, collagen, warming spices, rice, and shatavari, it's an easy breakfast, snack, or gentle dessert that's just as comforting in July as it is in January.

Shatavari is an herb that has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine to support women's health. Traditionally, it's valued for postpartum recovery and as a natural galactagogue, helping support healthy breast milk production during breastfeeding.

Whether you're in the fourth trimester, breastfeeding, or simply looking for nourishing foods that are gentle on digestion, this is a recipe you'll want to save.

Water is one of the most important ingredients in food, yet it's one of the easiest to overlook. 👀

We spend a lot of time sourcing organic, regenerative and nutrient-dense ingredients, but we also believe the water we cook with is just as important. That's why every meal is prepared using filtered water designed to reduce chlorine, heavy metals, and other unwanted contaminants before it ever reaches our cooking equipment.

In this video, Eric gives you a behind-the-scenes look at the filtration system we use in our commercial kitchen and why it’s important to us.

Did you know to ask what kind of water your food is cooked in? 💧

If you're pregnant, preparing for birth, or planning for postpartum, these are the books I recommend again and again. 🤍

So much of what we believe about nourishing mothers, honoring the fourth trimester, and supporting postpartum recovery has been shaped by the wisdom in these pages.

📖 Real Food for Pregnancy by Lily Nichols: An evidence-based guide to prenatal nutrition that every expecting mom should read.

📖 Nine Golden Months by Heng Ou: A beautiful reminder to slow down, nourish yourself, and prepare for motherhood with intention.

📖 The First Forty Days by Heng Ou: One of my favorite postpartum books, filled with timeless wisdom on healing, rest, and postpartum nutrition.

📖 Ina May's Guide to Childbirth by Ina May Gaskin: An empowering perspective on physiological birth from one of the most respected midwives in the world.

📖 Or****ic Birth by Elizabeth Davis & Debra Pascali-Bonaro: A thoughtful look at what's possible when birth is approached with trust instead of fear.

📖 Magical Beginnings, Enchanted Lives by Deepak Chopra: A gentle, spiritual perspective on welcoming new life into the world.

These are the kinds of books I come back to over and over because they remind us that caring for a baby begins with caring for the mother.

Have you read any of these? Or is there a pregnancy or postpartum book you'd add to the list? Share it in the comments so we can all grow our reading lists!

One thing I wish more moms knew is that postpartum is a time to slow down and nourish your body with warm, cooked foods.

For generations, cultures around the world have served new mothers soups, broths, congee, stews, and porridges. There's a reason for that.

After birth, digestion is naturally weaker. Warm foods are easier on the body and can help support healing, hormone balance, milk production, and energy.

I learned this the hard way after my first postpartum. I was living on smoothies and salads and ended up dealing with terrible bloating and constipation. Everything changed when I started focusing on warm, nourishing meals.

If you've ever wondered why warm foods are so emphasized in postpartum, we wrote up an article explaining the research and traditional wisdom behind it.

Comment WARM and we’ll send it to you.

One thing I’ve learned as a brand-new "Sunny" is this…

One of the hardest parts of postpartum isn’t just the sleepless nights—it’s remembering to nourish yourself while you’re busy nourishing your baby.

Since Zoey and Jake moved to Florida in March, they haven’t had time to build the community they need. That makes every act of kindness mean even more.
I am so incredibly thankful for Jake’s grandmother for cooking homemade meals, and for everyone who gifted Zoey meals from Restorative Roots off her registry. These meals have been such a blessing during his first week of life.

I’m always talking about the importance of meal prepping, remembering to eat and fueling your body properly; but let’s be honest… when you’re a brand-new mom, meal prepping is the last thing on your mind. Reality has hit me too because I forgot what a newborn was like.
You’re feeding your baby around the clock, recovering yourself, and trying to grab sleep whenever you can.

As a Functional Nutritionist, I’m pretty picky about ingredients, and I can honestly say these meals check every box for me. They contain whole, nourishing ingredients I fully approve of, and they taste amazing.
Even better? One container provides about three meals, making them incredibly budget-friendly while giving new moms one less thing to worry about.

If you know a new mama—especially one who doesn’t have family nearby or a community to organize a meal train—this is one of the most thoughtful gifts you can send. Proper nourishment is so important for healing, recovery, supporting breastfeeding, and keeping mom’s energy up during those early weeks.

Sometimes the greatest gift isn’t another baby outfit…
It’s making sure Mom gets to eat. 💜

The food that heals a postpartum mother starts with healthy soil. 🌱

That's why we source from regenerative farms. Better soil. Better food. Better nourishment.

It's more work and it costs more, but we believe every ingredient—and every farm behind it—matters.

It's not the easiest way to build a meal company, but we think it's worth it.

What our grandmothers knew about postpartum… and what we have almost forgotten.

The village did not disappear because mothers stopped needing it. It disappeared because the world stopped building it.

Every postpartum tradition across history agrees on one thing: a healing mother must be fed. Warm, intentional food that rebuilds what pregnancy and birth asked her body to give.

That is what Restorative Roots delivers. Browse our menu here: https://restorativeroots.com/pages/menu

You may have heard that postpartum foods are supposed to be warm, soft, and easy to digest for the first 40ish days... and one pushback we often hear is, "But I am having a summer baby... there is no way I can eat hot soups."

However, in both Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda, warmth in the postpartum period isn't about external weather-it's about supporting and rebuilding internal balance. Birth depletes heat, blood, and fluids, leaving the body vulnerable to "cold invasion," regardless of the season. So even in summer, warm foods help replenish what was lost and protect long-term vitality (especially digestion, immunity, and hormone balance).

Warming foods aren't about eating chili in a heatwave. They're about healing from the inside out-gently rebuilding your strength so your body can cool itself more efficiently. Think of it like a warm hug for your digestion, your hormones, and your nervous system. You don't need to eat hot soups in 100° weather-but the principle of "warm, soft, and easy to digest" still applies. Think gently warming spices, cooked foods, and room-temp nourishing drinks instead of icy, raw, or processed ones.

For a list of ideas for meals, snacks, and drinks that are warming and healing to the body, but won't overheat you like a steaming hot bowl of chili visit here: https://restorativeroots.com/blogs/postpartum-blog/postpartum-food-and-meal-ideas-for-summer-births-what-to-eat-after-delivery-in-hot-weather?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social

And don't forget, when you order Restorative Roots postpartum meals you won't have to cook, so you can forget about sweating over a hot stove and doing a million dishes... just heat and eat!
