Saturdays often find more folks from out-of-town than locals shopping at The Cottage. It’s the conversations overheard or the questions posed that offer clues that visitors, intentional or by happenstance, have graced our small town.
Such was the case on Saturday (May 30). The Cottage received visitors, both first time and returning, from all directions — from within Mississippi (neighboring counties, and as far as New Albany), Tennessee (as close as Savannah and as far as Nashville), Alabama (several from across the Shoals area), even beyond our continental border, all the way from merry ole England.
A couple from the Shoals area shared that they often came to Iuka to dine at a local restaurant, but had NO IDEA that there was a “downtown” until they saw the posts for The Spotted Cow and decided to follow the directions that led them to Downtown Iuka on a balmy Friday afternoon, May 29th.
When they arrived around 6:30p, the Tishomingo County Farmers Market was winding down. They talked with one of the sourdough vendors who told them the market was held every Friday until October with fresh produce, baked and canned goods, and more times than not there was live music. During their meal at The Cow, they were told of the sister location, Cream & Sugar Cafe. After their meal, they drove around the square, enjoying the ambiance of our quaint Downtown with its lit string-light streets.
Needless to say, the couple returned on Saturday morning for breakfast at Cream & Sugar and then enjoyed exploring Downtown Iuka. The wife commented they love to get out and go and were excited to discover Downtown Iuka’s eateries, shops, and park.
I shared about all the shops to hop around to and gave information about Downtown Iuka and around events — 250th Memorial Wall, Iuka Heritage Festival and Wheels of NEMS Car Show, and IDEA Markets and Dickens Christmas.
Indeed this couple felt as if they had uncovered a hidden gem in a town that they had often traveled through and to.
Let’s not keep “the best” a secret! Let’s share Iuka with everyone!
