The City is warning the community of a recent rise in sophisticated email fraud schemes identified by the Janesville Police Department. In several recent cases, scammers impersonated the City or other legitimate vendors by sending forged invoices or false requests to update payment information. Some messages used email addresses nearly identical to real accounts, making them difficult to detect. The JPD encourages residents and businesses to exercise caution when reviewing email communications, especially those involving financial transactions. Recommended steps include:
✅ Verifying sender addresses.
🗣️ Confirming changes directly with vendors using known contact information.
🔎 Monitoring for duplicate or unusual requests.
🔒 Using secure methods for sharing sensitive documents.
Community members may report suspected scam emails to JPD’s non-emergency line at (608) 755-3100.
