After 18 wonderful years, we’re sharing the news that Hops Downtown Grill will be permanently closing. Our last day of service will be May 9th.

Doug and Vonnie Day began the Hops concept in 2008, and Tim and Dana Phillips proudly continued that vision starting in 2017.

It has been an honor to serve this community with our Montana-inspired, made-from-scratch meals and to be a place where friends and family could gather, laugh, and connect.

We’d truly love to see you one more time before we say goodbye. Stop in, enjoy your favorite bites, and share a conversation with us as we celebrate the memories we’ve made together.

Doug and Vonnie Day created an amazing foundation when they started Hops in 2008, and we were honored to carry that vision forward beginning in 2017. From the very beginning, the goal was simple — to make every guest feel like they were walking into our home for dinner.

Most everyone would agree… there’s a “feel” here at Hops. Something you just can’t quite replicate anywhere else.

Our customers have come from near and far, and the memories we’ve made with you are what we will treasure most. You’ve truly touched our hearts. Here are just a few of those moments we’ll never forget — and we’ll continue to share more:

• The records on the wall — Doug Day put them up, and I don’t think anyone could have imagined the connection they would spark. Strangers sharing stories, reminiscing about music and moments in time, and leaving as friends. We always dreamed of finding a way to play them again.

• A guest flying into Kalispell for work was told to “go try Hops” by the flight attendant… then again at baggage claim… again at the rental car counter… and even at the hotel. Two hours in town, and he walked through our doors and said, “I’m here. Impress me.” We were happy to do just that.

• Three couples on vacation, seated side by side at the counter, sharing laughs and stories — only to discover they all lived near each other in Tennessee. Two days later, without planning it, they all returned… to the same seats… and picked up right where they left off.

• The incredible reviews, the word-of-mouth, and the cross-country (and even international) referrals that brought so many new faces through our doors.

• The couple who drove all the way from Indiana during COVID to celebrate a 50th birthday — and drove back the very next day.

• The family who dined with us once on vacation… and then came back every single night for the rest of their trip.

These are the moments that made Hops what it is. And they’re the moments we’ll carry with us long after our doors close.

We want to share a little more context about our decision, and to do so with honesty and gratitude.

After 18 years, Hops is closing due to a combination of challenging factors. We’ve experienced about a 30% reduction in sales, along with a noticeable decline in tourism. At the same time, we’ve faced substantial increases in taxes and food costs, making it increasingly difficult to sustain the business.

This isn’t the outcome we had hoped for. We truly dreamed of passing Hops down to the next generation and continuing its legacy in our community.

As for what comes next, we’re still figuring that out. For now, we’re focused on finishing strong and appreciating the incredible support you’ve shown us over the years. Thank you for being part of our story
