Back in 1976… before cell phones, before everyone had a camera in their pocket, life was a little different.

You came to Gilbert’s to have a good time. If you face-planted after one too many rum runners, your friends laughed, someone handed you a Band-Aid, another bought you a strong drink, and by sunset you were dancing again.

No replay. No comments section. No evidence.

Just cold drinks, live music, salty stories, and memories that somehow got better every time they were told.

Some things change… but the spirit of Gilbert’s never gets old. 🍹🌴

Three Decades at Gilbert’s. One Community. One Cause.

There comes a time when ribbons, hashtags, and awareness aren’t enough.

There comes a time when someone you know… someone who has laughed with you, celebrated with you, listened to your stories, and handed you your favorite drink… needs you.

For years, Gilbert’s has proudly supported the fight against breast cancer. Together we’ve raised money, served Boobie Drinks, worn pink, and helped complete strangers in their darkest moments.

We never imagined that one day the person needing that support would be one of our own.

Rebecca has spent years behind our bar, taking care of all of us. She remembers your favorite drink. She celebrates your birthdays. She asks about your family. She’s been part of countless memories made at Gilbert’s.

Now she’s fighting the hardest battle of her life.

On August 30, we’re asking our community to do what makes the Keys so special.

Show up.

Not because it’s a fundraiser.
Not because there’s live music.
Not because it’s something to do on a Sunday.

Show up because Rebecca deserves to look around that room and see the people whose lives she has touched.

Cancer is terrifying. No one should ever have to face it feeling alone.

Let’s remind Rebecca that she won’t.

Come for an hour or stay all day. Bring your friends. Hug her. Dance. Donate if you can. Let every musician’s song, every smile, every person who walks through our doors send one message:

Rebecca, we’ve got you.

Please share this post. Someone who sees it may be the reason Rebecca feels just a little stronger that day.

We’ll see you on August 30. Let’s fill Gilbert’s with love.
💗

BREAKING NEWS: OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM THE FLORIDA SPINY LOBSTER ASSOCIATION

Attention humans.

We noticed you’ve started buying snorkel gear, measuring gauges, and enough sunscreen to be seen from space. We know what day it is.

Mini Season is July 29–30. Please read this before turning my neighborhood into your weekend hobby.

-First of all, if my shell is under 3 inches, I’m not legal. Measure me in the water with a proper gauge. “He looked about right” isn’t a measurement.

-Daily limit: 6 of us per person in Monroe County and Biscayne National Park. The rest of Florida gets 12. We don’t know who negotiated that deal.

-Possession limits still count. On the water, you can only have your daily limit. Off the water, it’s the daily limit on July 29 and up to double on July 30. Yes, they’re counting.

-No night diving in Monroe County during mini season. If you show up after dark looking for us… go home.

-If we’re hanging out in Everglades National Park, Dry Tortugas National Park, sanctuary zones, Biscayne Bay/Card Sound, Coral Reef Protection Areas, or John Pennekamp during mini season… we’re off limits. Respect the signs. We read them too.

-Bring your saltwater fishing license and lobster permit unless you’re legally exempt. We don’t make the paperwork, but we fully support it.

-If I’m carrying eggs, congratulations… you’re looking at a lobster mom. Keep swimming.

✂️ Don’t rip my tail off underwater. I have attachment issues, and it’s illegal anyway. We have to come ashore whole.

-No traps. No gadgets that stab, crush, puncture, or otherwise turn me into a science experiment.

-And one more thing, ONE LAST announcement from the lobster community…

Please stop inventing imaginary lobster jobs.

Holding the boat isn’t harvesting.
Taking underwater selfies isn’t harvesting.
Watching from the sandbar with a drink isn’t harvesting.
Saying, “Go get ‘em!” isn’t harvesting.
Being the DJ doesn’t count.
Neither does being the official sandwich inspector.

If they didn’t legally catch lobsters, they don’t get their own bag limit. Trust me… we’ve been reading the regulations while you were buying new snorkel gear.

Good luck out there. Follow the rules, measure carefully, and remember…

I’m not hiding. I’m complying with Florida law.

Today, we honor the life of Scotty Migone. ❤️
Scotty was more than an amazingly talented musician—he was one of the kindest people you could ever meet. Every performance at Gilbert’s left a lasting impression, not only because of his incredible talent, but because of the warmth, humility, and joy he shared with everyone around him.

We are grateful for every song, every smile, and every memory. His music will live on, and so will the impact he made on so many lives.

Rest peacefully, Scotty. You will always be remembered and deeply missed. 🎸

Today we say goodbye to Scotty Migone, and our hearts are heavy. Gilberts was one of many stages he graced, but every time he played here, he brought magic. His talent was extraordinary, but his personality is what truly set him apart.

Scotty had a gift — not just in music, but in the way he treated people. He never had a negative word to say about anyone. His smile, his spirit, and his kindness made him unforgettable. He brightened even the darkest room.

To everyone who ever heard him play or had the privilege of meeting him, you know how special he was.
We will miss you, Scotty. Rest in eternal peace. Heaven gained an angel.

RICO REPORT:

A Successful Key Largo Holiday Weekend is when the Incident Report fits on ONE page.

Every great Fourth of July weekend needs an opening ceremony. Ours started with a boat catching fire across the water from Gilbert’s at the Anchorage.

Around 11 p.m., someone noticed smoke coming from the boat and apparently decided the best course of action was to set up a fan so the smoke wouldn’t bother the guests. Unfortunately, this innovative firefighting strategy failed to impress the fire.
A short time later, flames broke out. One guest by the pool immediately jumped into action with a garden hose while others called 911. Within minutes, the Key Largo Fire Department arrived in full force and quickly took over. Not exactly the fireworks anyone was hoping to see, but thankfully the situation was brought under control.

Apparently, all the excitement was happening tacross the way this weekend. The next day’s feature presentation was an adult mother-daughter fight that escalated far beyond a simple disagreement. Multiple people immediately ran over to stop it, and thankfully the situation was quickly under control. Contrary to popular belief, the Fourth of July is not an official family fight championship. Alcohol apparently missed that memo.

Then came our featured guests.

A nice couple checked in and seemed to be enjoying the afternoon by the pool. At some point, it became apparent they had likely been drinking before arriving, so we brought them bottled water and suggested they hydrate. Oddly enough, they seemed offended by the gesture.

Not long after, they announced they were heading to The Big Chill for more drinks.

That plan ended there.

We weren’t about to let anyone drive in that condition, so bar hopping was officially canceled.

The evening continued downhill. At one point, the gentleman stormed to the front desk insisting his room key didn’t work.

After a quick investigation, it turned out the key worked perfectly.

He was simply trying to unlock someone else’s room.

Unfortunately, his customer feedback quickly escalated from “my key doesn’t work” to felony-level complaints, including threats toward the front desk staff. At that point, we had no choice but to end their vacation early.

As it turns out, the fastest checkout isn’t express checkout—it’s threatening the front desk.

Despite a few incidents that kept Rico’s notebook busy, the rest of the weekend was exactly what the Fourth of July is all about.

Our staff showed up dressed in their red, white, and blue, the music never stopped with great performances from Ray Nichols Band, Angel Riot, Silver Spine. They all are very talented musicians. The tiki bar was full, the beach was packed, familiar faces returned, plenty of new ones discovered Gilbert’s, and together everyone made it a fantastic holiday weekend.

Finally, Rico would like to thank everyone who spent the holiday weekend with us… including those who accidentally earned a cameo in this week’s Rico Report. 😄
Let’s be honest—we’ve all done something we’d rather not have become a story. The important part is that everyone can laugh about it afterward, learn from it, and make better memories next time.
Thank you all for your continued support. You’re the reason Gilbert’s keeps thriving, and we truly appreciate every one of you. ❤️🤍💙
