There was an inquiry recently about 'why are your cupcakes so expensive?'. Well.... let's break it down!
My most recent order was so fun and creative and unique to do. The smallest cake I offer to make (unless its a naked smash cake), simple requests, simple and inexpensive filling, but here's the thing, putting it all together was not simple.
Baking the cake at least 1 day prior so it can set. Dishes and sanitizing instruments. Day of decor.... 4 batches of buttercream (yes, even for a small cake), multiple mixing bowls, piping bags, piping tips, stained hands from coloring the buttercream, cake cutting, crumb coat, letting that set, whipping buttercream over and over to keep it nice and soft, flower piping then setting, dishes, dishes, dishes, carefully placing the cake in the box (it's a thing, iykyk), clean up and more dishes, tylenol for the aching back. Begin at 830am and finished at 1pm. 4.5 hours on the smallest cake just decorating it.
This is not taking into account the cost of the products used versus what is actually charged.
I love baking and I love having a small bakery. You see the end product, that is the goal from my perspective, not the time and effort that goes into it. Or the hidden costs.
Now that it is has been broken down for the smallest cake, can you take a guess at how long a larger cake takes? Or individual cupcakes? Or sugar cookies?
So, when you see the price list for a small, homemade, allergy friendly bakery, you are not only getting great quality, but behind every homemade item is a baker who lives on Tylenol, smiles, swearing, and hope that the creation meets your expectations.
It is not about the cost of the product, but the love they put into creating it.
